We just recently purchased DVC for first time at Poly. Very excited about it and after going through the process we really regret not doing this much sooner. We eventually want to add to our annual point total and obviously the cheapest route would be to purchase on the secondary market. Can someone tell me what the advantages/disadvantages to buy on secondary market and not directly from Disney?

Pro:
Cheaper
Points behave the same at home resort
Con:
Takes 3-4 months for the process
No direct benefits (MMB, MM, Discounts, Exchanges, AP, etc.)
Restricted from using at new resorts

Agree with most of the info here. If you bought direct and already have 'blue card' privileges for things like APs, MMB, discounts, etc, you're already ahead of the game. Then buying resale could save you a lot of money. You just can't use those resale points to book at all the DVC resorts in the future - but you can still use your direct points at any. We have a nice combo of direct and resale that has worked very well over the years......
