Purchase phone card for texting?

Okay, I have read much of the cellphones for Cdns thread and some other related ones. I know that Roam Mobility is highly recommended and that using Wifi for msging via the internet is another option. But I got this email from my sister (who will be travelling with us) and feel I need to at least try to investigate whether this is indeed an option:
A. said when they were in US with friends they bought $25 phone card which allowed them to do texts to keep in touch with each other. Maybe you can find something out about that.


Is this even a real option?

Well, nevermind....upon further reflection my sister has decided that A might have bought a SIM card for an unlocked phone (which makes sense to me!).
