Which one do you prefer and why? I admit I am a bottled water snob but with the price increase and bottle deposit:scared1:, I am going to make the change...

Also, are the aluminum water bottles worth it? The kids want them.

Thanks for you help.

Skip both and put a reverse osmosis system under the sink... beats the pants off of Pur or Brita

The filters themselves are typically cheaper for Brita than Pur, if that makes a difference

Can't say anything about faucet filters...would like to get one myself. But, the aluminum water bottles tasted nasty to me. I tossed mine out. Then, I got a stainless steel one. That one is terrific. The water tastes great..much better than the aluminum ones.

Thanks, I will make sure to check that they are stainless steel. Do they keep the water cold?

Googled reverse osmosis systems, definetely out of my price range right now. Definetely could be a choice in the future, but I still need some reviews if anyone has a Pur or Brita. Thanks.

I never had a Brita faucet mount. A friend used the pitchers and it always left grey charcoal residue in the bottom of the pitcher and the water always tasted carbony to me. :p

I had a PUR faucet mount for a while, but the water here is so full of minerals or whatever, that a filter only last half the time it's supposed to, then would clog up. I liked the taste a lot better. No weird filtered taste. :thumbsup2 But, moneywise, I realized it costed approximately the same amount as buying bottled water since I was getting half the usage.

Also, if you accidentally leave the filter on while hot water flows through, it ruins the filter that much faster. You really have to be careful to watch whether the filter is in the up or down position. :headache:

I'm now looking into the PUR countertop or pitcher models. Amazon has pretty good reviews of them.

thanks, I have a brita pitcher and didn't like it either that is why I thought maybe the faucet hookup would be better. We also have very hard water where I live. So I guess we would blow through filters also. I will google the countertops... I wonder how the flavors are?

I haven't tried the flavors. I've been adding drops of lemon juice to plain, unfiltered water, to deal with the taste until I can figure out which filtered system to get.

This is the PUR systems I've been looking at.
This countertop model has 390 positive rviews at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/PUR-DS-1800Z-2-Stage-Water-Dispenser

This oval pitcher fits into the door of the refrigerator:

http://www.amazon.com/PUR-CR-6000-Stage-Water-Pitcher/

One reviewer says hers clogs too, and she just takes out the filter and soaks it for 10 minutes, (which is what is supposed to be done when starting a new filter.) Then, she gets full usage out of it. I guess it moves around & unclogs the minerals from being packed down. The reviewer is also from NY, so she probably has the same water as me. I found that review especially encouraging since she woul probably have the same problem I did with the faucet mount filters. :thumbsup2 As far as I know, there is no way to unclog them.

I am at the other side of NY and our water is horrible also...

This is what I was going to say.:thumbsup2

I've had a Brita in the past, but reverse osmosis blows it away.

What would something like this cost??

You can do it yourself and I think they run around $150-250. If you are not handy, I know in our area it runs about $700 for system and install. About $150 for servicing it every 12-15 months.

I calculated that we were spending $500 a year on bottled water since I was not happy with my Brita. Add to the amount of waste we were creating and the wear and tear on my body to hoist around cases of water everytime I went to the store and it was worth it to us to get an installed system. We love it.

We just installed a RO system in our new (well new to us) house. It cost $169 and DH & his father installed it with no problems. I watched them install it and it was a piece of cake, I'm 100% confident that I could have even done it one my own :goodvibes if I needed to.
