It has been a busy week on the puppy front. We have a nine year old PBGV who has produced a large nubmer of AKC champions. On Monday I took Winnie in to be x-rayed. There were four puppies clearly shown but one was far smaller than the others. This puppy just had poor placement from where it was implanted. The vet indicated that a puppy this much smaller than the rest was likely not to make it but lately the vet has seen a number of puppies like this survive and do well.
My son and I decided not to tell my wife about the vets doubts about the likelyhood of this puppy surviving.
Winnie went into labor this morning and delivered one puppy (the small one) at 9:35 this morning. After two hours, we ended taking her in to the vet for a c-section. The remaining three puppies were delivered. Each of the other three puppies were twice the weight of the first puppy.
This afternoon the small puppy died. My wife and my daughter are very upset. The breeder in Atlanta who co-owns the dog with us was happy that it was not one of the females. In breeding circles, females are the puppies that make you the money.
I am off to get some chocolate to see if that will cheer my wife up.
