puppies, kitties, and parakeets!

Ok, so we decided not to get a puppy for Christmas. We are going to wait until summer. I would also like to get a cat, BUT we have a parakeet. CAN you have a cat and a bird in the same house????

My parents do. The cat and the birds are so use to each other that the cat sleeps right by the bird cage on the counter top. Again, they are use to each other.

You probably can. I think just make sure you get a kitten & introduce him/her to the 'keet so that the cat'll get used to the birdie. My friend has 4 birds, a cat, & a Golden, & they all get along just fine.

We have a quaker parrot and two cats. We got the cats as kittens and they have never bothered the bird. The bird stays out on top of her cage all day long. She will sometimes climb down and walk out to where we are and they will follow her. It is funny to see. It looks like she has bodyguards. On the other hand, the bird has nipped their noses a couple of times when they wanted to sniff her.

This is true in my home also..........I have 6 cats and 1 Nanday Conure, sometimes when the bird is out he will land on my lap on top of a cat! I think it is important not to leave them unattended, it's also a different situation when the cats are all well fed and content. But I would never leave the bird out without supervision.

I would never leave the bird unattended!!! I was concerned just with the bird in the cage... is it safe in there with a cat???

How do you introduce the kitty to the bird?

I have a cat and a parakeet. My cat is fairly lazy and docile, and the bird is kept in his cage, out of her reach. So we "rarely" have problems. She did knock the cage over one night when I stupidly left it on a table she could climb on...poor birdie was frazzled but okay. So I would advise to always keep the cat and bird separated, when you let your birdie out, make sure the kitty is in another room. Because cats will be cats! I'm sure my cat is dreaming of the day when she finally catches that bird...

The bird should be fine in the cage, but when our cockatiel comes out of the cage, the dog and cat have to get locked up. The cat hasn't been a problem and she shows absolutely no interest in the bird, but you never know. The dog, on the other hand, is just biding her time until she can get a mouthful of feathers. If we so much as open the door to the cage to pet her, the dog is right there. We're very vigilant, and we keep the bird flighted enough so she can get away just in case. That's something you might want to consider with wing trimming.

Well, we live in a house with 3 cockatiels, 11 parakeets and 3 cats! The oldest cat is 17 and has NO interest in the birds, in fact, I think she is scared of them! The other two are 14 WEEK old kittens and they are another story! They are waaaaay too interested in the birds. I have the birds in two cages in a separate room. They are only allowed out when the cats are not around and the door has to remain tightly closed. Thise kittens could easily kill the birds if they get ahold of them. I do believe the animals can coexist (obviously..) but they need to be carefully watched and kept separate.
