Punch question

I recently bought a couple scallop punches in different sizes which I absolutely love!! But besides doing a letter per scallop I can't figure out how to print on the paper and have it match up to my scallop. For example I have a 2.5 punch and I go into paint and write "memories 2013" and print it and try and punch...it doesn't match up

What am I doing wrong?
Are there any good free programs that maybe have the circle templates that I just fill in my information, print and punch away

Thanks for any advice!!

I would suggest you try to punch out a piece of dark paper, then scan that, and then open that jpg in word, and use that as a template to place your words.

Just one way of doing it.

I agree with dogcarbon...

Or I would just keep printing it and trying it via trial/error but that is me...I take the hardway 99% of the time!

What I did for leaves for a family tree was to print on a piece of paper, match up a punched piece to see if sizing works (I hold the paper and the punch up on the window to see through the paper).
If it fits, I use a little adhesive tape to hold the punched shape over where I printed and reprint.
Just make sure your printer will take thicker pieces of paper. On occasion I've gotten some pieces jammed.
