Punch Buggy

For those of you who think Volkswagon doesn't know that they are doing, don't get marketing. Look right here - people are taking about Volkswagon on a Disney message board! They are not only reminding people of fond childhood memories about Volkswagon, but they're also getting future consumers involved. My kids have no memory of "punch buggies," but they're shouting out whenever they see a Volkswagon - it's genius!

It's a shame that VW is going to stop producing Beetles again after their 2010 model year.

Which is the reason why they are touting "all VW cars" for punch buggy.

I see you're from PA. I am too, and grew up with it being Slug Bug. But I more recently changed to the much cuter, but still effective Punch Buggy.

I had to school my daughter in Punch Buggy etiquette last night. I was driving and thus unable to reach over for the punch, so I lightly tapped her with my elbow. She decided that it didn't count and punched me back, so she got a lesson in "mama makes the Punch Buggy rules and is always right."

SCHOOLED! :hippie:

:thumbsup2 I highly doubt that they "don't know how to play the game"!

I always called it Punch Buggy. I just learned of "Slug Bug" today on this thread.

And we always punched, but not very hard b/c dad would have been mad if we girls punched each other (and my little sister was not nearly as observant since she colored and read in the car, but I was prone to car sickness and had to look out the window at all times).

We grew up with punch buggy and are doing it dilligently whenever we're in the car- the kids love it.

it's both old and new beetles

2 punches for vintage or convertables

if you say the wrong color the one you punched punches you back-hard.

we don't allow for bugs that are always there(like neighbor's or teachers in the school parking lot)

My 10 yr old was off limits since she couldn't see over the seats- she's been sneaking in a few punches of her own lately so that may change-lol!

I've played "Punch Buggy" since I was a little girl.
Old or new Beetles are included.
When I was a kid, color was involve, but no longer.
You do get punched!

BUT with my kids, we all have a way of getting out of getting punched.
If you yell "punch buggy, don't punch back" you can attempt to hit anyone around you...HOWEVER, if they quickly yell, "Bug Repellent", you cannot hit them. They are now 'protected' from being punched. :)

Got this new version from their cousin and that is how we play it now. :)

Southeast PA rules:

It's called "Punch Buggy," only VW Beetles counted, and they could be old, or new.
And, yes, you will be pummeled if you are not the first to see the bug.

Punches were doubled if it was a Punch Buggy with a Padiddle (only one working headlight). :rotfl:

Up here in NJ, Padiddle counted for any car we saw with one headlight out.

We always called it Punch Buggy growing up (in the 80s)

My grandmother use to watch me and my cousins when we were little and then in the summers growing up after we started school and there was a VW Bug repair shop near her house and everytime we passed it we would all start beating the crap out of each other in the backseat and it always resulted in us getting yelled at......ah the fond memories of childhood.

It was always Punch Buggy in the Washington, DC area. Punch Buggy Red, Punch Buggy Yellow. Never heard of Slug Bug, but we have Slug commuters here in this area. They are people that wait in certain areas to join up as part of a car pool so that the driver can use the car pool lanes.

I love the punch buggy no punch back. If I see an old style buggy-like Herbie, I am like "old school punch buggy" no punch back.

We also do the PT cruiser bruiser.

I drive a dodge stratus, so we do a "stratus slap" if we see another stratus on the road. DD11 is very good at this game.

Or cadillac whack. police car punch. we get bored easily, so we think of stuff.

Stevie Wonder in the commercial is hilarious and so non pc. course i had to explain to dd who stevie wonder was.

Either that or you guys just like hurting one another.... :rotfl2:

LOL. Actually, we don't see a lot of punch buggys around here. So we had to come up with different ones. DD11 is very good, but she will "give me" punch buggys or whatever by saying punch buggy for you, etc.

I never play it back in the day and a few years ago, my then dh did it and he almost got a smack down right there in the car-lol. then he explained what it was.

We play with only bugs, as well. When my DS6 was little that game helped him learn his colors! Of course, he never got punched. My DH played with some weird hand motion. They would say"VW shield" and make the motion and no one could punch them. I've never heard of that, so we overrule him!

It was always "punch buggy (color), no punch back". No other rules or anything wierd. And yes, eventually the ones always parked in the same spot no longer counted. But I can't think of a single person in my family that didn't play it.

And the commercial bothers me to some degree that it's not a true bug. Who cares if it's supposed to be the "soul of a bug"... far from it.

I did the elbow hit with my friend as it was hard to punch while driving. The only time it really hurt was the "dual-sighting". OW. My arm hurt and his knuckles hurt for a while and we spent the rest of the way on I-4 into the Orlando 'burbs wincing in pain. We gave up when traffic got too heavy.

hmmmm....I'm wondering if "Slug Bug" and "Punch Buggy" are regional terms. Looks like Slug Bug is in the West and maybe Mid-West. Punch Buggy seems to be from the East and the South. Does that seem to explain it?

(I had never heard of "Punch Buggy" before this thread!)

I'm also a DC native (born and raised inside the city limits)...we NEVER had Slug Bug or whatever...it was always Punch Buggy (color). My mom drove a powder blue bug back in the 70's and early 80's...
