Pulling into a parking space backwards....

Seriously, what's the point? Besides making things difficult for the most that pull in forwards.

How does it make things difficult?

1. It seems to take quite a while to pull in backwards - backward, forward, backward, forward, pull completely out and try again because you didn't get it right.

2. Now that you've pulled in backwards, your rear view mirrors are obstructing my ability to get into my back seat. Especially if you have a BIG truck with those rear view mirrors that stick out at least a foot from your vehicle.

The main point for me is safety. I always back into the parking spots at DD's school because I don't want to be backing out AFTER school lets out with small children running around and all the other vehicles trying to leave at the same time. And this is even more important, IMO, for the bigger vehicles which may have a harder time seeing behind them when they back out.

People that do this assume that they can do it quickly but reality is different. I try to find spots where I can pull forward so I don't have to back up if possible but I don't back into spaces if I can't.

I always reverse into a parking space & 99% of the time can do it 1st attempt, no shunting backwards & forwards. I do it because it easier to pull out when I want to leave & safer as I can see clearly if people, cars etc are coming along

I'm not sure I'm following you. If you are talking about an angled one, sure that's going to mess with people leaving. When they are open, I pull through. It's easier to pull out than to back out. I don't have to worry about people walking behind me while I'm backing out because they are in front of my face. I am pretty sure I read an article that said it also saved gas to pull through. I don't waste my time backing into a spot. I also used to drive a full-sized pick up truck. If I could pull through, I most definitely would. Sometimes I would search out spots like that, simply because of the size of the vehicle. I am a short person, it always seemed like my blind spots were magnified in that vehicle. We had the dual doors on it also. I never hit someone elses car with it, mirror or door.

1. That depends on the driver, I never have any problems backing my minivan into a spot

2. If you pull in foward and the big truck with the huge mirrors pull in foward arent the mirrors in the way of your front door? Why does it matter that they are now in the way of your back doors


I back in because I would rather pull out of the spot facing foward so I can be sure I'm not going to run anyone over.

But backing into a space is no different then backing out of a space -you still have to back up at some point .

I back into a space in my garage at work. But usually there are no other cars around. Other times, I don't. (well, except if I have to park on this one row at my dd's indoor soccer complex. It's down a hill, I've got a little Prius, and the lot is LOADED with the big SUVs. I can't see a ^&$^ thing if I have to back out of those spaces!) My biggest pet peeve was when I parked at the Metro parking garage. People enter in long lines of cars, and someone wants to stop traffic to back into a space?? Rude, for sure.

I park backwards in some locations to facilitate an exit.

Unfortunately, people have gotten downright rude and won't help people by allowing them to back out. I shouldn't have to let a whole parking lot drain so that I can back out safely.

Thus I back in at concert events, sporting events--anything (if I remember) where the entire parking lot plans on emptying at roughly the same time.


I'm sorry you are put out--but that's just tough.

Unless there are signs specific to not backing in--noone is doing anything wrong.

Thats most likely because when driving a truck, or minivan you cannot see everything that may be behind you. If there is a child running away from their parent and they are shorter than where the window is in the back, it is possible to not see them as they pass by.

I always back into parking spaces. For me, it is also a safety issue. It is easier to see backing into a space than backing out. Also, if your battery dies or something else happens where you need to get under the hood, it is much easier to do this when you have backed into a parking space. Trying to get or give a jump when a person has pulled into a space is more difficult (and I have, unfortunately, been in the position of having a battery die or car not start when I have been parked in a parking lot).

99% of the time, I can back into a parking space correctly the first time, without all of the backup, pull forward, backup, pull forward, backup business...

One of MY pet peeves is people who blow thier horns at people who are backing into a parking space, as if it's somehow illegal or wrong. If the few seconds it takes to wait for someone to back into a space is going to make you late, then you should really consider leaving your point of origin earlier.

How is it inconsiderate?

I don't block anyone when I do this at all.

And it is much safer to back into a space than out of it considering noone will wait and like to speed through the parking lot.

I suppose you can't stand us parallel parkers either.

I'll do this--but it is fun for folks to assume that everyone who parks backwards are just being inconsiderate.

I'd like to know if they ignore those folks trying to leave and whizz by them while they sit patiently waiting for a safe opp to back out of the spot.
