We have a Pug puppy who is 3 months old. She will only go up stairs, she won't even try to go down a set of stairs. Is this common with Pugs? She seems awfully scared to even attempt going down.

I don't have a pug, but ouor labradoodle would just sit at the stairs and whine (up or down) until he was about 6 months. He mastered the stairs at our old house and then last year after we moved (he was then 6 yrs old) he again developed a fear of the stairs in our new house. It took about two weeks for him to go down them. He was fine going up in the new house but absolutely refused to go down. We had to move his bowls upstairs for a while. I'm sure your puppy will master it. Have you tried putting a treat on the step below her and sitting right below that?

No pug here but I did have a corgi that would only go up the stairs. He never mastered going down them. We always had to carry him to the bottom.

I do have pugs, but never had this issue with stairs...we do not have a staircase, but they do go up and down them with no issue.

Give it time and patience. Don't force it, and don't coddle him or let him get into bad habits like always being carried. (Sorry hodgieha.) Just go about your business downstairs and make it sound really fun down there. ;) He will want to join you. If the stairs are slippery, consider putting treads on for traction. The one thing you may want to keep an eye on (pun intended) is whether his vision is ok. Watch for it in places other than the stairs.

Have you tried training her to go down?

We have a pug mix and she only had issues when she was a very little puppy (and that was really because she was small not because she was a pug).

Yes, I think it is a size thing too-my 3 mo Beagle puppy won't go up or down the stairs yet. We did teach her to go up/down the shallow stairs for our deck, but she doesn't do the house stairs yet-which is fine by me since she's not allowed upstairs anyways until she's a big, housetrained girl :)

We've got a pug, and he'll only go down uncarpeted stairs in our house. He sits at the top of the carpeted stairs and just whines. But once we carry him downstairs, he'll go up those same carpeted stairs with no issue. :confused3 We have no idea what the issue is for him. Good thing he's so cute!!

My old standard poodle had some stair issues. He learned to go up and down our up stairs--it's 4-5 steps--but would NOT go down to the basement--about 12 steps. Would. Not. One time we had someone staying with him who decided to "fix" this problem by forcing the issue. :sad2: Didn't work out too well. Minky was so anxious he tore up a bunch of stuff and then vomited and had explosive diarrhea everywhere. Mm, yeah. Let's just say, no one ever tried that again.

Our Pug used to have problems with stairs but then we moved into a 2 story house. It took some time but she got used to it. Post pics if you can of your new baby. :)

This is Lola. Thanks for all the advice. We will keep working on it. I wasn't sure if it was a common pug thing because the way their eyes are. I don't think she has any vision issues. She has been seen by the vet and has gotten a clean bill of health thankfully! I just need to remember that puppiness is a work in progress;)

Ahhhhhh! She is so freaking cute!!! :lovestruc

Is a Boston Terrier. She wouldnt go downstairs until my DD brought over her dogs and my dog saw the others go down the steps. THEN she figured it was OK:confused3

Maybe your fur baby just needs a canine mentor.

2 six month old pugs here. Just give it some time. They will be going up and down stairs soon.

She has one:) she follows him up to the top of the stairs and then whines and won't come down. We have had her for 3 weeks and he's finally getting the idea that she's not going anywhere so he may as well try to play with her so maybe that will help. He is not aggressive to her in any way he just walks away from her everytime she tries to get him to play. He is a 4 year old yorkie lhasa mix who I will admit is quite spoiled;)
