For those of you who have had Publix cakes, whether as a wedding cake or anything else... What do you think of the frosting? The cake we are interested in comes with fudge frosting with buttercream flowers. Is the fudge frosting very rich? I like chocolate, but I don't want too rich. I was thinking about asking for buttercream frosting instead.
Insights? Opinions?

I had a slice of Publix cake with chocolate frosting on my last trip. It was tasty! However, I dunno if I'm the best judge for you, because the phrase "too rich" is not in my vocabulary! :rotfl: If it helps, I definitely prefer buttercream frosting to whipped cream frosting, which tastes like air to me. The frosting on the Publix cake I ate definitely wasn't, like, the richest, gooiest, dense-est chocolate I'd ever had. But it wasn't light and fluffy like whipped cream frosting either. It was sorta right down the middle.

We always have Publix cake and my family consider's it one of the best cakes out there!!! The buttercream frosting is our favorite with yellow cake...we have also tried the chocolate frosting, it's super creamy and yummy.

I LOVE Publix cakes. Their fudge frosting is my fave. I usually get all my cakes from there with fudge on the outside and buttercream on the inside. It's delicious!

Ok. So the fudge frosting isn't too rich or sugary or thick?

Basically, don't want it to be like 'Oh, that was good. But it was so rich/heavy/sugary that I don't think I can do another piece.' Because I tell you what. Wedding day or no wedding day, I like cake. And I'm gonna want more than one piece. :)

The cake looks SO yummy on the Publix site.

I think it's perfect if you don't get it on the inside of the cake too. It's perfect for the amount of cake without grossing you out or being too rich. The layer isn't thick either so it's not like you have 3 inches of frosting like the normal butter cream publix frosting. It's barely an inch of fudge frosting on your cake. But I highly recommend the fudge on teh outside and the buttercream inside with the marble cake. YUM!

Sounds yummy. In fact, I believe what you described is exactly what we are going to order.

But the Publix site mentions both marble cake and vanilla/chocolate cake. What does "vanilla/chocolate" mean? Does it just alternate? I'm not sure how many layers they put in a tier. Anyone know anything about it?

I did ask a Publix contact by email (I live in Pittsburgh, so I can't just walk into a store to talk to someone) but the description was not exactly clear to me.

Awesome. Thanks for the opinions.

And thanks Girli565 for all the info! It's quite helpful.

I am late, but Publix chocolate frosting is SOOO good..very creamy!

Publix remade our wedding cake last month for our anniversary and it was awesome..they really do an excellent job.

I live in Pittsburgh now but grew up in South Florida, and I will tell you (I don't like sugary sweets either) that Publix cakes are the best! I had my parents fly one up here for my birthday last year, and it was delicious. It puts Giant Eagle to shame, and I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with any kind of frosting on it. You will definitely want another piece!

Totally looking forward to it. My mom is going to go talk to someone at a Publix (my parents live in Florida) and we'll get it ordered. :)

Hope your surviving G20 without problems.

This thread is very helpful... I want to do a two tier cake four our tenth anniversary. Live in Canada. When I spoke with Publix yesterday they weren't that helpful. Say I have to pay in person two days in advance?? Why not over the phone? Couldn't tell me if I was speaking to a Publix close to WDW. Should I go with them or Try Winn Dixie. Winn Dixie is doing a cake for me next week and they have been very helpful. Are their cakes any good or should I persevere with Publix.

now I don't have any experience in wedding cakes or whatever, but I would pick Publix over Winn Dixie any day!

My publix sells frosting they make.

It's usually buttercream and I suspect it's left over from cake making, but they put it into one of those pastic clear boxes, weigh, sticker it, and put it in the semi-cooler with the cakes. About the same amount you'd get from a betty crocker tub of frosting. Colors available vary by day (hence my suspicion that it's leftover from whatever they made.)

I would also choose Publix over winn dixie any day. Publix makes the best cakes I've ever had. the butter cream is awesome, lighter than most, and the chocolate fudge is heavenly.
