Hi there

We are off to Disneyland next month. We will not be hiring a car but have booked private transportation for our airport transfers and a couple of all-day trips away from DL. We will be bringing my 2 years old's big car seat to use on those trips.

We are hoping to use public transport for a couple of local trips. Any advice/tips would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Lisa:)

It depends on where you want to go. LA is huge and spread out. In Los Angeles proper there is a subway it goes some places, but is in no way comparable to your tube. I myself wouldn't try the buses. There is a train a couple km east of the park. It's called Metrolink. http://metrolinktrains.com/
You can transfer from Metrolink to the subway and use it to get south to San Diego by getting on thier trains called the coaster.

Mostly without a car you will need to use cabs.

Thank you for your reply. The places we want
to go to are all in the Anaheim area.

The reason we are avoiding taxis is we would
have to carry the car seat around once
we reached our destination.

I never rent a car during my trips to the Park, because using public transportation is such a huge $ saver, because not only do I not pay to rent a vehicle, I also don't have to pay for parking (and it doesn't hurt that I'm originally from the area, and so know my way around ).

You can get most anywhere you'd want to go in the area by using the ART, Metrolink, L.A. city bus, and OCTA bus. If you're just travelling around Anaheim/Buena Park, it's super easy, but be mindful of when the buses stop running...you wouldn't want to, say, spend a fun day at Knott's only to discover the last bus left already!

Here's a link to the "trip planner": http://www.metro.net/ It encompasses all the forms of public transportation available...Metrolink, L.A. city bus, OCTA bus, L.A. Metro (subway) system. You just type in the addresses & when you'd like to leave or get there by, and it'll give you the route numbers & where the bus stops/train stations are. It doesn't include the ART buses, but it's still an invaluable tool for planning.

Hopefully this info is helpful; any other questions, just ask!

To help you out, I think more information is needed.

What kind of advice are you looking to receive? Where are you wanting to go? Public transportation in So. Cal. is a little less than desirable. More information about what you are wanting to do can help people help you.

I think that is is general/safety tips I am after. Its the sort of things I would advise a visitor to London who wanted to travel on public transport.

- Always buy an Oyster card as most buses in the city do not take cash.
- Never ride on the top deck of a night bus :scared1:.
- Ask the bus driver to let you know where to get off.
- You need to ring the bell at request stops.

I am sure that most things are common sense but any tips would be much appreciated. DH and I both have cars but public transport is very much a way of life here. My boys also love riding the bus. :)

Tips for public transportation in the DLR area:

If you're taking the ART bus, you'll need to purchase a pass ahead of time. You can buy a pass ahead of time on their website (they'll send it to your hotel so you can pick it up upon check in), from the kiosk near the bus bay in front of the Park's main enterance, and from many of the hotels in the area. Technically, most of the ART buses accept cash...however...in my experience...the cash fare box is not working on many of the buses. Not a nice thing to find out when one has been waiting half an hour for a bus after an open-to-close day in the Park...trust me, I know! Also...it's cheaper to buy ART bus passes for multiple days, rather than buying one per person each day that you use the bus.

You'll need the exact cash fare for OCTA buses and L.A. city buses; fare prices can be looked up in advance on the link I gave you. :)

On OCTA and L.A. city buses, make sure that you ask the driver "does this bus go to..."name of your destination goes here"", because some buses on the same routes don't take the entire route each time. Also because it's kind of easy to get turned around & lost when one is unfamiliar with the area.

The ART bus, the OCTA buses, and the L.A. city buses all have the standard bell/pulley to let the driver know where to stop.

Alot of the bus stops, no matter which bus line you take, aren't marked all that well (ie: they have a small sign, but no bus bench or bus shelter). I imagine though that if you're just using the bus to go to major attractions in the area & your hotel, you won't have any problem knowing where you are!

If you'll be taking the Metrolink trains, you'll need to arrive to the station in plenty of time to purchase tickets. As the stations nearby the Park aren't the "end of the line", the train only stops for a couple of minutes to allow riders on and off. Make sure to ask someone (a conductor, a police officer, another rider who looks like they know what they're doing ) if you're getting on the correct train before boarding. Both the Metrolink and Amtrak trains run on the same rails, so it can be kind of confusing even when one has been on the Metrolink many a time. So, it's best to ask someone even if you're pretty sure that it's the correct train :thumbsup2

The bus route between Anaheim and L.A. is the 460; that bus picks up and drops off next to the taxi area in front of the main entrance to the Park. This is the bus to take if you want to go to Knott's (it's about a 10 to 15 minute trip).

That's all I can think of at the moment...if I remember something else, I'll post it...

OH! hehe, I SOOO didn't get that. I thought you wanted, "Take the number __ to ____ and then change to _____" ahahahaha!

- I think it's the same safety tips as most places:
- Be alert.
- Keep your belongings close to you.
- If concerned, sit near the driver.
- If someone makes you uneasy, move.
- Don't flaunt anything expensive you may have on you.
- Double check with the driver that you are on the bus that goes where you want to go when you board.
- Don't sit in the back.

Others have posted great advice as well,
Dreams
