Hi all! So after never having done a trip report I now have two going at once!! This trip will be 15 days going from San Fransisco, up to Red Bluff, and then down the PCH, over to Disneyland:yay::yay:, then down to San Diego before we head back to Michigan! After this Crazy California trip my hubby and I will be taking an anniversary trip to WDW for the Wine and Dine Half Marathon sans children!

Crawling around the World TR

Let's focus though! We have less than 2 months to go till we leave for the Golden State!

Cast of Characters:

Me: Sarah, I run a home based travel business which allows me tons of freedom to be a stay at home mom.

Derek AKA FSUPharm77: My hubby and co-conspiriter. When he isn't busy planning our next Disney adventure he is a pharmacist.

Grace: Our soon to be 13 year old daughter. Loves dance, and has a great sense of humor. When I don't want to throttle her because we are figuring out how to coexist with twice as many hormones, she is super fun to be around.

Dustin: Our 9 year old son. A real sweetheart who is going to grow up to be a huge teddy bear of a man.

How the trip came to be:

Now how to use our time wisely?

How this trip came to be:

In addition to being a stay at home mom who runs a travel business out of my home office; I'm also a cellist, cello teacher and of all things a pygmy goat judge. As a judge I have to go to training every few years, and last year it was in Southern Illinois almost to the Kentucky border and it took place before my kids were out of school, and I just didn't want to go. 2015 was already scheduled to take place in Red Bluff CA, and I started to put a bug in Derek's ear about all the things I wanted the kids to see in California. San Francisco, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the PCH, and of course DISNEYLAND!!! Dustin has never been to the state at all and Grace was only there for 18 hours at age 2, and a weekend while I was judging at 4 months old.

I had a $500 voucher towards airfare that I had scored from a bump during a judging assignment in Phoenix and a bunch of miles I could turn in too. We ended up buying our airfare around Christmas, just to have that detail and bill taken care of.

After looking at the date of my training June 20-22, how long can we spend In California total? If we took off the day after the kids get out of school and fly back in time to celebrate Independence day with our family we will have 15 days, and luckily Derek got approved for a two week chunk of work off during the summer!

Now how to use our time wisely?

More planning-

So the first hurdle we have to work with is right in the title- "Four Family Members in a Compact Car" Keep in mind we will be driving close 1200 miles all told.

Back in November when planning began Derek started looking at rental cars, picking up in SFO and dropping off in SAN plus needing the car for over two weeks was leading to some big rates. One day he was looking and Firefly had a rate of $386... with taxes!!! So we booked it! Oh wait. What size is that? Compact what? And we are not a small family!!! The 12 year old is trying to push for 5' 10 and the 9 year old is 5' 1". I have planned to take one regular suitcase and 2 carry-ons. Everyone will be very limited in what they can bring, lots of mix and matching of outfits for sure.

I am praying fervently that we will be offered an upgrade for $10 a day? If not we have a backup plan at Alamo but it is almost $900.

We have been lucky in that Derek's cousin works in hospitality in NorCal She has also not had a chance to do all the "touristy" things in San Fran, because all of her friends have already done them. The kids are geeked to hang out with Kelly while we are there. And Derek and I are geeked to get a comped room while in such a pricey city.

May I suggest a side trip on Lassen day? Take the time to visit MacArthur Burney Falls. It's right there in the same area. The falls are beautiful and the hike to the bottom is a easy hike and lovely. This is one of our favorite places to camp. We used to go every summer and drive over to Lassen. There's a lot to be said for a kids joy at playing in the snow in the middle of summer.

I am very excited to read about your plans and your trip! We have a similar trip planned for summer 2016, so I am anxious to hear about how everything works out for you guys! :)

I have been to Burney falls and I want to warn you that while it looks like an easy walk, and it is getting down, it seems like the top will never come back. my second trip we just took photos from the top....

Thanks for the warning. Last time we had a hike uphill like that there was crying involved from DD. Granted the uphill hike was on the way to a place she really didn't want to go, so maybe this will be better. :rolleyes1

One thing is that you can always turn around and comeback up. My kids had no problem with it when they were little.

Tickets Tickets Tickets!

50 Days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have our matching Disney Shirts done yet, but have made contact with a guy to print them. I thought maybe this trip we wouldn't have to do matching shirts, but my DD quickly quelled that notion. "Mom we have to!"

We also found out that our son will be missing his last day of school. His school had a huge renovation done over the summer and they started 4 days later than the rest of the district. They just released the new schedule and his last day we will be on our 9:00am flight!! Good thing they never do anything the last day of school anyway.

Back to Planning:

How to get the best value out of everything we want to do in California? City Passes seem to be our answer. We ordered the San Francisco City Pass once the tour times for Alacatraz were released. The ticket covers the cable cars and MUNI system, the Exploritorium, the science museum, and the aquarium which you can substitute for the Monterey Bay Aquarium which is what we are doing. It also covers a Blue and Gold Bay cruise that you can substitute for the Alcatraz Cruise if you call Alcatraz company directly to buy the Citypass.

For Santa Cruz we added a Day long ticket for the Boardwalk with our hotel.

I still need to find a Whale Watching tour for Monterey Bay.... this is one of my Highlights of the trip I want to see some whales!!!!!

We also ordered a SoCal Citypass Which gets us a 3 day Park Hopper, plus Legoland, and SeaWorld with an add-on for the SanDiego Zoo.

Derek and I have ZERO interest in Legoland, we would rather stroll around the Gaslamp district in San Diego, but the kids both lit up like Christmas Morning when they heard we would have tickets to there. It is right on the way from Disneyland to San Diego, but we are hoping to not have to be there too long!

What to wear?!?

Just the thought of trying to get all of our stuff into a small car is giving me fits! At Grace's doctors appt last week we were talking about the trip, and when the doctor heard about the compact car possibility she asked if I needed a script for Xanax! I think she was only half joking :rotfl2:.

I'm trying to limit everyone to 7-8 tops and 4 bottoms, everything coordinating and mix and matchable of course. Normally we have matching/coordinating shirts for everyday of a WDW trip. When I told DD that we weren't making shirts for Disneyland she just looked at me and gave me this look

Confused-SAy-what-GIF.gif

So I called on the DISigners and put one together, of course I couldn't actually get diamonds printed so we went with this and they came in today and I think they look good!

It mimics our 2013 shirts

So most important shirts packed..... now what else to wear.

Hi!

Your shirts are adorable. Packing is the hardest part. When planning our trip my 22 year old daughter wanted to rent an SUV so that we had a lot of luggage room. Silly girl.

joining in after your post on my PTR. wow 2-weeks! That sounds like it will be a great trip. I so want to get to San Francisco at some point but felt it would be too rushed for us this trip and thus why we are only doing San Diego. Me taking a full week of from work is a lot (I tend to do at least a few hours of work each day while on vacation as well) so I'll take what I can get. Someday the wife and I definitely want to do San Francisco and the wine country though!

I love your shirts - what a great idea to put a diamond on them to tie in with the celebration!

I do hope you are able to get your upgrade to a larger car for not too much more. We are rather small people (I am by far the tallest at 5'8") and can't do anything smaller than a minivan :rotfl2:

DH and I did San Francisco and wine country back in 2012 when I was judging a show out there..... we stretched every penny out of that trip with groupons and priceline!

Where to stay?

So I just went through and counted and we have 9 hotels booked for this trip!!!! Whew!

Want to see them? Of course you do. That's why you are reading a PTR :)

DTW- The night before we leave there is a possibility we will do a park sleep fly, instead of having someone drive us down the morning of... even if they drive us we may get dropped off the night before, just because we like to be there, with no chance of traffic messing up the beginning of our trip!

The Americas Value Inn looked a little scary to us the first time we drove up, as it is all single story buildings with outside entrances. We were surprised at the clean nice updated rooms with comfy beds and great service so we have continued to book this hotel. Yes you hear the planes all night.... totally to be expected with its proximity to the airport, but @ $60 a night with taxes using their loyalty card it just can't be beat!

Our next scheduled hotel is the polar opposite of this due family connections we will be hanging our hats at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco.

hyatt%20sf.jpg

Yes there is a trolley car stop right outside of the lobby! And as we have the 7 day pass included as a part of our CityPass we will be taking full advantage of this perk.

Now we love our children, but they are huge and wiggle in their sleep. So we are shipping out sleeping bags and air mattresses for them to sleep on at most of our hotels. Everyone will sleep much better this way. We also always sleep with white noise, and every device we own has an app installed. This makes things consistant for travel because no matter where we are it always sounds the same!

After San Fran we head up north to Red Bluff and Downgrade back to our normal accommodations of a Comfort Inn

CA771A1.jpg

I have stayed here before and the pool is small but clean and shaded, and breakfast is quick and included!

After my training we head back down the coast towards Muir Woods.

We will stay at Mill Valley Holiday Inn Express in a pool side room, I used my points to get it for $70 as opposed to the $200 I had it booked at originally. We stay with Holiday Inn a lot due to their nice travel agent discount.

SFOMV_1718773168_1359845425_P.jpg

After touring Muir Woods the plan is to hop on the PCH and hit a few touristy places before spending the later half of the day and evening in Santa Cruz.

This was actually the last hotel booked because I was leary about some hotel locations and reviews stating that things were dicey not far off the pier. We chose to go with the Seway Inn; a little more costly than some places but with some good views and good reviews.

Monterey
Bay was an easy decision because one of the closest and best reviewed hotels was the Holiday Inn Express Cannery
Row

MRYEX_1433066377_2528064476_P.jpg

After a Whale watching tour first thing the next morning we head back down the PCH with a stop in Cambria. We did quite a lot of research and inquiring from friends to decide on a stop for the night.

Right now we have a room booked at the Fog Catcher Inn. once again the views swayed our decision for this night.
569249_25_z.jpg

on second thought maybe it was the wine that swayed our decision?!?!

After this we head down a little farther south before cutting over to Anaheim!!!!

And here comes our HUGE SURPRISE!

The kids think we are staying the Holiday Inn Anaheim, but instead we have booked the Paradise Pier Hotel. Club level Park View! I know it is the least desirable of the three resort hotels, but we scored a great deal as a travel agent perk and we couldn't pass it up.
paradise-pier-00-full.jpg

We are only staying there 3 nights and will have to move after our last full day at the park, but we are just sliding over to the Holiday Inn so it shouldn't' be too bad.
WELCM_EXTR_01_P.jpg

First thing the next morning we head towards San Diego

originally we had a room booked at the Andaz, with a friends and family discount.... but still a high price tag, and not really kid friiendly.

So where did we end up booking, yep you got it a Holiday Inn. Though I am keeping my eye on the embassy suites, just because I love them. Two rooms and all would be greatly appreciated by the end of this trip.

The bad part is that there is a Holiday Inn Express going in the Gaslamp Quarter, but it won't be done till August.

so for now we have the Holiday Inn downtown booked.... still looking for some input here.

Whew I'm tired just thinking about all the packing up to get in and out of all of these rooms.

Love your trip!! We are WDW frequent flyers but have taken several trips the past few years to California and our great love...Disneyland!!! We have stayed in a few of the same hotels. Make sure you don't over schedule your Alcatraz day, I only say this because it takes a little time traveling out & back and the audio tour is excellent, we spent more time out there than we had anticipated. My then DS9 loved it and still talks about it and is fascinated with its history. We all really enjoyed it ( we traveled with my mom also). Also if you have time(but I don't think you do) the Walt Disney Family Museum is REALLY great, I think there is something for everyone but it's extra special for fans. Even if you can't do the Walt Disney Museum, right near it in the Presidio and close to Golden Gate is the Lucas Studios. This is a neat but quick stop. Basically the security guards greet you and allow you to enter the main lobby. There are some awesome displays, props, and artwork from his films...and a fun Yoda fountain in the courtyard. It's a neat little stop that really only takes about 20-30minutes tops and is directly on the route(overlooking) Golden Gate. I hear Lassen is supposed to be beautiful, I hope to make it on one of our next California adventures. We had fun at then Santa Cruz Boardwalk, but have never been there in true beach season. We love the historic roller coaster, and the kitschy feel to the rest of the park. However we don't spend tons of time there, and SOME areas can seem a little sketchy, BUT we have NEVER had a problem. Monterey is fun, and an interesting aquarium. We actually stayed at the Fog Catcher and really liked it. We were behind schedule in our touring and finished at Hearst Castle basically at closing time(instead of mid day as planned), and decided we would alter our plans and find a place to stay locally. We found Moonstone Beach and the Fog Catcher first and honestly we really liked it, and have talked about going back. The beach is really cute and we had fun hunting for Moonstones! Onto Disneyland....we LOVE it!!! It is not the same as WDW , some things are not as good, some are far superior, but mostly it's just a wonderful change of pace and experience. I love how close everything is. The food , especially counter service, is far superior. It's Walts park!!! It has Carsland!! Love it , love it, LOVE IT! As for the hotels....we REALLY like the Paradise Pier....especially the rooms you have. Just make sure you request a higher floor (maybe 10 &up..check this on PP disboard thread)...to make sure you re not at tree level. In my opinion, the high up park view rooms have THE best view of any of the WDW & DL resort rooms. Now I know they are not a bungalow lake view at the Poly, but for the price of a moderate(kind of), you get a phenomenal view! The view at night is crazy beautiful, and the aerial view of World of Color (with TV piped in music) is awesome(it does NOT replace seeing it in park). The rooms are pretty big by Disney Standards, probably because it's an older hotel. I feel it has enough Disney touches but others disagree. I also love certain buildings/rooms at the Disneyland Hotel but can't say they are better than the PPH. I love the Lobby and common areas of the GCH but I am not as impressed with the rooms, they seem smaller and darker. I think you will be very happy. Everything is so close at DL compared to WDW, who cares IF it takes you 2 extra minutes to commute to the parks? We always crossed the street & cut thru the GCH. I have been to Legoland several times. My DS11is a Lego fanatic! That being said, I think most of the rides will be a bit tame for your kids but there are a couple of good ones for older kids. I also think most anyone would enjoy mini land and the crazy awesome Lego creations throughout the park. I think if you research what rides you think will be up your alley age/interest wise, and just cruise the park looking at the Lego creations, skipping the rides on non interest, and finish in Miniland, you will enjoy it. There is nothing like Miniland, and non brick fans also find it fascinating. Be aware the water rides get you SOAKED! Also, Mindstorms is a program probably both of your kids would enjoy, it's programming robotic Legos, it's pretty fun, but you need to sign up as soon as you enter the park. The San Diego Zoo and it's Safari Park in Escondido are favorites of ours. The Zoo is VERY hilly , but worth it. Take the bus around the park to orient yourself, then maybe a sky tram back up to the top and come down one side, then maybe the shuttle back up to walk down the other...it's worth it.

You re going to have an amazing trip!!! We re hoping to hit DL in late August or October (both would be nice) to catch some of the 60th Anniversary celebration. We are also always plotting how to work more time into our trips to spend in San Fran or San Diego-we never have enough time in either city.

Have fun!

Wow Mackey!!! Thanks for all the tips... working them into our schedule now! 38 days to go ;)

Wow that is a lot of hotels! All looks good - though the picture of the Fog Catcher Inn really caught my eye- (though, it might have been the wine ;)

That's great that you are surprising the kids with the Paradise Pier! We surprised our kids our last trip to WDW (we stayed at the Contemporary) and my son had fallen asleep in the car and his face was priceless when he woke up when we were in the parking lot

We actually just booked our hotel for our days in San Diego in October and we are staying at the Embassy Suites La Jolla. It's a little bit north of downtown - but that puts us that much closer to Disneyland (we are doing San Diego first) as well as closer to the main activity we are doing there (the San Diego Zoo Safari Park). Plus it was a bit cheaper that other options so I had enough Hilton points to cover the entire stay

More Fun Stuff

So I often make things for the kids to take to Disney to get signed or to collect.... such as 2011 when we took fabric squares to get signed, which combined with photos printed on fabric Derek's Aunt Lee turned into this.
IMG_2368.jpg

Well for this trip I don't think we will be
dragging that much paraphernalia around all of California, and I also don't believe it will be that character centered of a trip.

I did however make them some containers to do pressed pennies... with help from the DISigners from these boards. I just had a horrid thought:earseek:They do have pressed penny machines in Disneyland right?!?!?!

I hope so because they turned out cute and we have been collecting brand new pennies and getting enough quarters to load up the tubes.

Here's Grace's with a nod to the Diamond Celebrations
2015ppm.jpg

And Dustin's honoring his long infatuation with Cars and the excitement over Carsland in DCA

And here are the finished Tubes ready to go into the backpack!

33 Days to go!!

Ordering my photopass tomorrow with some gift cards that we got for Christmas. I'm not sure of the value over what we get out of our WDW 8 day trips, but then again one great shot to put over our mantel would be worth the $69.
