i know this is a Doctor of Psychology, but could anyone tell me the distinctions between this and a Ph.D. in psychology? thanks!
 
Hes, I have a friend who has a Psy.D.

Historically, Ph.D. degrees in Psychology have always come from academic programs. Today, these university settings look for people who are primarily interested in research.

Over the last 10-15 years , some Professional Schools of Psychology have sprung up which allow students to get a Psy.D.; most of the emphasis in training is on clinical work rather than research. The schools are accredited but they're not part of big academic institutions.
 
ND, MD, DVD, etc are practice doctrates, a PhD in any field is usually research based. I am currently trying to pick a doctoral program that focuses on practice and education.......but it is very hard ! Most programs are PhD....and would require on site research work for years ! PhD programs just set my teeth on edge ! The paternalism of "come sit at my feet and learn, till i decide you know enough " just grates me on every level ! I would rather earn a few more master's degrees any day ! I may find a DNsC, which is the nursing practice doctrate.
