My daughter is also a National Merit Scholar. It opened many doors for her. She ended up getting a full ride to the college where she wanted to attend in the first place. About 1/2 of that was National Merit money and the other half was thrown in to entice her to pick that school. They actually pay her to attend! It really is a big deal, if your school of choice participates in heavy NMS recruitment.
The test "counts" for National Merit purposes in Junior year. I recommend taking the October SAT Junior year. It is always a few days before the PSAT test date. It really helped in our case.
