DH's PS3 is out of warranty and needs repair. It shuts down almost immediately after turning on while flashing a red light, and started doing this after I inserted a DVD that I have used many times before. Might be dead. It is well ventilated and all vents are clear of dust. Other electronics on the same power source also work.

I see how much Playstation charges to repair. Wow! Any reputable repair services that don't try to rob you blind?

Thanks!

Ah, the red ring of death. I don't live in your city but there are several places here that fix PS3s, usually for a flat $75 fee. My son got his fixed that way. Check the web.

Red ring of death is an Xbox problem. I have never heard of it with a ps3.

PS3 has a yellow light that kills it.

It's the fact that the soldering is non leaded and causes issues with the power supply. If you want it fixed, some one has to take the entire motherboard and re-solder it with leaded solder.

If you ship it to Sony, it'll be a couple hundred out of pocket. Your best bet is to get a new slim model. Preferably the old style (160gb). Have your husband save everything to the cloud save (free with PSPlus) to make it easier to transfer the save files. You can sell the broken one to Gamestop as a trade in, they take about $30 or so for the repair, but you can also get any promotions that are going on. Recently they had one going on for like an extra $50.

Not a bad lifespan if he has one of the original models.

I had my son's fixed at Disc Replay and it was $90. It usually takes about a week to get back.

Ours is freezing up occasionally and is still under warranty. We are thinking of taking it in while on vacation. Do I have to save his games he has downloaded on the hard drive? I do not know how to o this.

If he bought them on psn they can be downloaded on the new box. You can put save games on a USB thumb drive if he has any he couldn't bear to lose

Thanks, we will save on the thumb drive. Ours is still under warrany. I am sure they will just repair.

Not all saves will go to an external hard drive. You need to use the cloud service if you want all the saves.

My bf has done this two times. First time it was from the old system to a new system. He used an external drive, but not all the saves could be transferred. The second time, he went from the original hard drive to a 1TB drive. This time he used the Playstation Plus cloud service (I believe it's up to 5gb free). It took him a week to get everything onto the new hard drive, and he used like 700gb of data with all his games installed.

You put the saves on the cloud, then any games purchased off of PSN will have to be redownloaded. Any disc games will need to be reinstalled and updated; however, the cloud will have the saves ready the next time he plays the game.
