It's birthday and Christmas gift planning time in our house and PS2 is on the list. I'm not up to speed on electronic games and if I ask the experts (my kids) I'll ruin the surprise.

Who can tell me about the newest PS2 system. I don't think the older (meaning first PS2) machines are for sale any longer. I'd appreciate any and all feedback.

Thanks!

The first machines were just Playstation machines or PS1s. The "newer" machines are PS2s. They are actually quite old by video game standards these days since it has been out for several years now.

The PS2 can be purchased for about $150 these days. The PS3 is slated to come out probably late 2005 or early 2006. So the PS2 probably won't be obsolete for quite some time.

Playstation2 (PS2) is among the latest systems. The other comparable systems are X-Box by Microsoft and GameCube by Nintendo. Playstation one (PS1) is still available to purchase, but you don't want to. At this point it's quite old (in terms of technology.)

They have come down in price. You can get one for around $150. That's with no games and one controller. Count on buying games, of course, and also a good idea to purchase another controller for 2-player games.

Oh, and you'll also need to purchase at least one memory card (around $25, I think.) The memory card allows players to save their progress. This is important (very) to kids, believe me!

I thought PS2 and XBox both have hard drives, which eliminates the need for memory cards.

I know PS or (PS1) is the older version, we still have one. Lately there's been a new PS2 advertised. It's a thinner machine and supposedly faster loading.

You definitely need memory cards for the PS2. I don't know about the X-Box.

You don't for the x-box, it has a huge hard drive!

As for the "new" PS2, it's smaller and they've reworked the networking ports.

The other thing about the PS2 is that you can play the PSone games on it but you can't save the game, it's really irritating!! We keep the PSone downstairs so the kids can play and still save the games and the PS2 is upstairs so we all can play! I'm waiting none too patiently for Kingdom Hearts 2!!

Just wanted to add, since TinkBoo&ElliesMum reminded me - you CAN save PS1 games when playing on the PS2 - you just have to insert the memory card from the PS1 - it will work, no problem! :)
