My DH and DS have recently become addicted to the Star Wars (Lego version) game - thanks to a recent trip to SSR (they have one in the Community Center) and our local credit union has the game (don't ask...). Anywho, we can't decide which game system would be better. We have quite a few of the old machines including an old playstation. We'd like to chuck all the old systems and upgrade to a new one. So, home gaming experts, which system is better for E rated games - Nintendo Gamecube or the Sony Playstation 2?? :confused3

My kids, boys 23 and 10 prefer the Playstation 2 over Gamecube

I would suggest the PS2, but only because of one thing. The Kingdom Hearts games are on the PS2. I love these games and my 4 yr old loves to sit and watch me play them.

My husband and I are video game junkies. We actually have playstation 2, game cube and a X box. I personally prefer game cube ( I love Zelda and Mario  )but the playstation has a much larger variety of games to choose from.

I think there are more E rated games out for the Gamecube than the PS2. I own both. The PS2 is mine, while the Gamecube is for my 4 year old.

If your son is closer to 13 though I would go with the PS2. Many of the T rated games are suitable for the 10+ crowd and the PS2 does have better graphics. Plus you said your DH wanted to play games as well.

I would suggest going down to the local Gamestop or Electronics Boutique and search online for the various games out there for each system.

While the PS2 has Kingdom Hearts, the Gamecube has Mario Bros. games such as Mario Kart which is a blast for all ages.

Also the Gamecube has 4 controller ports so the whole family(you didn't mention if you had any other children or if you were interested in playing too) can play the multi player games (and I do believe there are more of these for the Gamecube than the PS2), while the PS2 only has 2 controller ports.

Edited: I wanted to add that although we own the PS2 and the Gamecube my family plays the Gamecube more often. While I play the PS2 by myself. My kids are young though, my oldest DD is 4 and my DH isn't really into gaming but he enjoys MarioKart. Personally I've been playing my Nintendo DS alot! I love that thing. My DH bought it for me after I delivered our 3rd child 6 weeks ago! Gave me something to do while in the hospital and now I am hooked.

Both my DS8 & DH both just said "GAMECUBE"..

mind you..we have:
Gamecube
PS 2 (2 of them)
X-Box
X-Box 360

I think gamecube is better for littler kids although I have both as well! Although I think with the new platforms being released this year the prices for both ps2 and gamecube will probably be going down.

The gamecube has hardly any new games! We've had one here for a while, but I'm thinking it's time to get a newer system for the men in the house.

That said, the majority of what IS available is E rated.

As I write this, though, the kids are once again playing Harry Potter on it!

The deciding factor in my house was that the Pokemon series plays only on GC.... And the GC is compatible with the Game Boy.... In addition, the kids love Mario...

No brainer for us!!!

We also own both PS2 and GC..GC is definatley more for children

But you say you have the old playstation..You can play Playstation 1 games on the Playstation 2 as well so that may help you decide

The Gamecube wins in at least one way - design. The PS2 is a technological failure, extremely tricky to code for resulting in it's power never being quite as well used.

The Gamecube also wins for the controller - the PS2 controller hasn't changed in aeons, whereas Nintendo have moved with the times and have produced a fantastic unit.

As far as games are concerned, the Gamecube boasts a selection of titles not available for the PS2, being Nintendo apps. However, there are far more titles available for the PS2 as a result of a great push by it's designers, Sony.

The PS2 also has a DVD player but personally I'd steer well clear of this - it's not all that great.

Aesthetically, either of the consoles can win out depending on the individual concerned. The Gamecube is a little weird and the PS2 looks like a breeze brick and hums away merrily. Go figure.

I'd personally wait for the PS3 and Nintendo Revolution . The XBox 360 is also a contender and is well built and coded for. In fact, I'd say plump for that due to it's killer game: Halo.

We have all the systems too and I would recommend the Xbox as our console of choice if only choosing 1. That's not on your list, so IMO, you'll get more bang for the buck with the PS2. Personally, I place the PS2 dead last of the generation. I don't think that'll be the case with the next generation though, but ultimately, it will boil down to the games.

I really feel that Nintendo never forgets the fun factor when creating a game and I think a lot of good, even great, games are missed by not having this console. Having said that however, I just don't think there are enough games to make the Cube your only console. The PS2 library is HUGE. Keep in mind that huge usually means more junky titles too, but I still think you'll find more to play on it than the Cube.

The PS2 is really the only option for fans of the Japanese style RPGs too. You'll get a few with Nintendo, but not many more than that.

If you're looking for shooter games (1st and 3rd person) Xbox is your choice.

Personally, I think the Cube should be bought as a secondary system no matter which others you might have simply because Nintendo makes so many of their own games and you won't find them on any other system.

I have a PS2. The PS2 has Kingdom Hearts. But the Gamecube was created more for kids. More kids games, and it was created more duriable. So, if it gets knocked around, it will still work. If you are leaning towards Nintendo, I would wait for the Revolution, because it will play ALL games, even DS games, over WiFi. The are going to try to keep the Revolution under $300. It really just depends on what kind of games your son likes. Maybe go your local EB, or Wal-Mart, or Target, and have your son look at the PS2 games and the Gamecube games. See which games interest your son more. If he likes more of the PS2 games, go with the PS2, or if he likes more Gamecube games, go with the Gamecube.

I say apples and oranges, really.

People knock the PS2, but if you are into Japanese RPG's then you have to have the PS2.

All you Kingdom Hearts Players that haven't played Final Fantasy are missing the jokes and background of Leon (aka Squall), Cloud, Yuffie, Cid, etc...and the evil Sephiroth.
It is just so funny that "Leon" and the gang talk to Mickey...:rotfl:

Nintendo is "Mario" and his crew of Zelda, StarFox, etc...good games.

XBOX...great graphics but other than that it is not my interest. I don't like first person shooter games or sports.

Well, it IS the most addictive game ever! :thumbsup2 Love that one. Love my little lego Obi-Wan Kenobi. LOL.

We faced the same decision a while back and we went with the PS2 - just for sheer choice of games. :)

This is why I own the PS2. I love playing Japanese RPG style games. We got the Gamecube at Christmas and I really love Mario too. I grew up playing Nintendo!

My family will be on the pre-order list for both the Revolution and the PS3. We don't have so much of an interest in the 360.

My kids are addicted to the Star Wars lego game too. For Easter I just bought it for their gameboy.

We have both PS2 and gamecube. They play PS 2 a lot more.
