Provincial Back-to-school Plans for 2021

We gave up on the plans for schools. We have tried to plan our lives around them for the last couple of years and determined it is a lost cause. We are going to Disney this upcoming weekend and don't care what happens with our kids school when we get back. If the negative tests/vaccinations are enough for them to return to school right away, great, if they have to wait some time and do school online, great.

If you're in Ontario, they'll have to stay home from school for 14 days after you get home.

I have been looking for this information, is it on the Ontario government website? We are taking our son away for two weeks and I didn’t know if he could return to school right away as he is vaccinated and having had a PCR test to return to Canada.

That's my question as well. They have to be tested before we get back, plus I think still do a test at the airport. We left a message on the school's voicemails asking them to tell us what their rules are.

If they are fully vaccinated, they don't have to isolate if they are exposed to someone positive for Covid unless they have symptoms... I find it hard to believe that fully vaccinated and negative test for travel means they should isolate. If they aren't vaccinated then I could understand that, though a negative test should have some impact.

Both the Ontario and city (Ottawa) screening for schools currently would have myself (a teacher) or a student allowed to return to school before 14 days if fully vaccinated and symptom free. I have confirmed this with my school board. Things could of course change, but for now if you are exempt from the 14 day quarantine because you are fully vaxed, you are to answer no to the international travel question.

One of my husbands coworkers just tested positive for Covid and is fully vaccinated. He has mild symptoms.. bad headache, sniffles. Suspected Delta variant.

So it’s in our community obviously. I hate to be so negative but I’m hearing what it’s doing in the school my sister works at in Florida . I can’t help but think it’s going to roar through our schools too since it’s so much more transmissible and our under 12s are unvaccinated. Purely speculation here , but I can’t help but think we will be seeing more school shutdowns this Fall/Winter. At least for the under 12s .

I am glad that my son is going into grade 7, at the high school. So all kids there will have the possibility of being vaccinated. I wish Ontario had opened up doses to kids a few weeks earlier since he'll only be able to get his second dose the first week of school, and then it's two weeks to being considered fully vaccinated. Still glad he has something at this point. I hope that the school will still take it seriously though. I do feel badly for those younger kids, I hope the cohorting and masking and all of that will help. At least in Ontario they are doing these things, and some boards are doing more.

I know within our board, there is a masking requirement for all students even in JK/SK so I hope it will not get as bad as it has in Florida, where there were no mask mandates until recently.

totally agree, but only if they be honest about it.I think vaccinated people have become more lax with precautions, without realizing they put their under 12 kids even more at risk than before.

@badiggio and @pigletto I think that at the beginning of covid, doctors were repeatedly saying "oh the young don't get as sick, so it's less of an issue for them"

Now that the delta is here and is more infectious, people keep going back to the early days off young = healthy, which we know doesn't apply to the delta strain.
i think it was more politics than common sense.Schools and School boards were putting out information that wasn't coinciding with what was being said by the parents of those children attending.
