My ds is 7 is in a non-compete soccer league. No scores
are recorded and coaches pull players who score two goals
to defense or off the field. Each player is supposed to play
two equal 10 minute quarters. Until today, our team was
"undefeated" in three years. Other teams have noticed this
and coaches have even complained to the rec center director.
It's nothing other than the kids are all friends and live
close enough that they play together frequently. They
look more like a team of 10 year olds-they pass, assist,
block, hold their positions, know the rules and love to play!
They go to the same school and
play at recess, they simply are in sync. So-today- a team came
after us, determined to beat us. They announced that this
was their "Super Bowl of Soccer". They chanted onto the field.
After the game-they gathered to have their pictures taken in
victory! Remember, this is a non competitive league.
Their coach pulled all their
weak players and played the strong kids the whole game. Our
coach played everyone just as he's supposed to and reminded
our whole team to stay in their positions. There was no score
until the 3rd quarter when our goalie, a boy who is just
learning and played his heart out, was scored upon. That
was the only score-their team played the whole field-even
their defensive players came forward to play offense. Our team
came off the field cheering! They had just played the best
game of their lives and loved it. They knew the score was
against them but they did not care-they had had fun! They
loved the competition! No one was sad-no one cried and
everyone had fun. It was phenomenol. Ds talked excitedly
the whole way home-my super competitive child lost his first
game ever and loved it!! Obviously, they have been listening
to and believing we grownups who tell them they are there to
have fun. It was so cool! I'm so glad my son has had this
great experience so early in life. What a kid! What a team!
What a coach!

What a wonderful story Shortbun!!! :) :) :)

You have every reason to be proud of your son and his team mates; it sounds like they have a great coach and a real positive situation there. . . :) :) :)

What a tremendous lesson in life, too. You are all to be commended!

That is truly one amazing team your son is a part of. I agree with Claudia, you all should be commended! Thank you so much for sharing that wonderful story, it sure brought a smile to my face this morning to hear about such a wonderful team.

Great story there, Mimi. Thanks for sharing. Kids do learn early in life, and it usually carries forward. Neat.

I can imagine how excited he must have been. :)

Great sportsmanship, and an awsome life lesson! Your coach, players, and parents should all be commended! Congratulations!!!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

That's just awesome.

My DS is playing in a 5YO Instructional League, and his coach is a very athletic, young dad, but he has never played soccer. However, his 'coaching philosophies' are really really strong. He told us parents that his biggest concern was that the kids have fun (they are only 5) learn teamwork and good sportsmanship. The rest will come, most 5YO's are not coordinated enough to be really good at soccer anyway. ;) Mine included.

Your son's team and coaches, and even all the other parents have done a great job, and should be heartily congratulated!!
