Protecting your skin from the sun

It is very important for all of us to protect our skin from the sun while in WDW. Just wondering what other people do to protect their skin from the sun other than loads of sun block. What are your favorite hats to use to protect your head and face? Is there a particular kind of long sleeve shirt you like to wear that gives you protection but also isn't unbearable to wear in Florida? Any other advice you would give people to protect their skin?

Living in Florida, I just use mineral sunscreen when I go to the parks. For my face, I use an SPF moisturizer and a setting powder with SPF. A great tip is to carry a mini SPF setting spray to use at the parks because not only is it great and simple to reapply, it gives a nice cooling effect! I've seen many people wear Columbia long-sleeve reflective shirts, but I personally can't wear anything that has sleeves longer than a t-shirt when it comes to the heat in the parks.

Australian-style bush hat for me (minus the corks) until we visited in May 2018 and I found a wonderful African game warden style hat when we went to AK on our first park visit (we were staying at AKL so the park was our obvious first day). It has a wide brim and is a sort of fretwork round the crown so good protection (I’m follicly-challenged 👴 ) but also allows for good ventilation 😊 . It’s excellent quality - I took it home on the plane, wore it during the UK summer, and bought another one on our November 2019 trip. So I now have two. I hope to buy another if they’re still around in November 2021 which is when we hope to return. I favour long-sleeved button-up shirts but without the necktie I‘d have to wear in the office - I don’t find sleeves a problem even in Florida and they’re more effective than any sunscreen) and long trousers rather than shorts.

For DW it’s t-shirt and shorts and regular high-factor sunblock (she hates long sleeves even in cold weather) and a straw hat that she picked up at the Cracker Barrel on US192, of all places.

I live in the mile high city. I don't ever go without sunscreen! I found a Neutragena stick for faces (spf 50) works perfectly. Not greasy. I use spf30 every time I walk out the door. Sun is just as strong at a mile up than it is down in Florida.

While I might wear a hat with a brim - during the summer months - it's too hot to wear clothing that covers - and that nice lightweight sun protective clothing tends to be really expensive. So - despite not loving to wear loads of sun block - that's what I do.

Fair comment. Linen is the best hot weather fabric, but the trouble with that is that I end up looking like the stereotypical Englishman in hot climates - creases all over and crumpled all round the edges! I try to wear pure cotton whenever possible...

We are from Texas.. it's really hot here
Neutragena dry spray, it's not sticky
I try and keep hats on the kids cause even with the face stick they seem to burn.

Dry shampoo is awesome for a refresher

I totally understand and share your worryings!!! I`m allergic to sun so during all my holidays I always take my medicine and a sun cream! Highly recommend buying spf 50.

Thank you. I have had melanoma so I'm kind of hoping people will see this and realize how important it is to take care of their skin while there and follow some of the tips people are giving.

I am naturally sensitive to the skin sun and also take medications that make me sun sensitive. Not a good combo. Add to that I react to most sunscreens and am therefore unable to use chemical sunscreen and most mineral formulations. There are only a couple specific products I can use and even they can be problematic in the right circumstances.

So, when at WDW or on a DCL cruise I use sun protective clothing as much as possible.

Wide brimmed hat. Socks with proper shoes.

Long sleeves and long pants. I actually find this cooler and more comfortable than shorts and tshirt because the sun is not directly hitting my skin -- where it is hot and at times painful.

I dress in layers.

My preferred option for the top is to wear an appropriate top of my choosing -- depending on the temperature so it could be short or long sleeve. I like LL Bean supima cotton tops, but choose whatever is comfortable for you. Then OVER this, I wear a sun protective cover layer [I like one with a hood]. I prefer Coolibar (https://www.coolibar.com/) products but there are others. This could be a lightweight jacket, or a coverup or a shirt. And I mean *lightweight*. A place like Coolibar has a range of fabrics to choose from and you can therefore choose one appropriate to conditions. For me this over layer is one I will use on multiple days. The fabrics I prefer are thin UPS-50+ fabrics. I actually feel cooler wearing them then not wearing them because they keep the sun off me and allow some ventilation and air circulation. If they get dirty they are easy to handwash at night and hang dry overnight even in humid Florida; they are also machine washable.

By layering I can wear "normal" clothes and then have the reusable over layer be the expensive sun protective layer. That way I don't need an entire sun protective wardrobe. Over multiple trips I can slowly building the number of pieces of sun protective items I have.

A note: the first sun protective shirts I used for a WDW trip were from LL Bean, but I found them rather heavy-weight and not well suited to hot Florida [they work well in December if you end up in a cold spell]. The coverups and jacket I have from Coolibar work much better if it is warm to hot weather, IME. YMMV.

For pants I usually just wear a decent weight dark colour long pant that is comfortable, which is what I do at home yearound as well. I do have some sun protective pants as well which are lightweight and very comfy which I got for my last trip and I will probably get another pair for our next trip.

I also have some semi gloves and sleeves that are sun protective for when needed. They are easy to carry in a park bag or purse and pull out as required. The ones I have are from Eclipse but other brands sell similar. https://eclipseglove.com/ Eclipse also has a nice gaiter that can come in handy.

For swimming I wear a normal bathing suit but over it wear a long sleeve UPF 50+ rash guard and swim tights and swim socks. I also have sun protective swim gloves and a swim hood if I feel I need it (good for snorkeling as it protects the neck too), and a sun protective swim hat if I won't be going under water.

Basically, I can pretty much manage so that the only place I need sun screen is face and hands. My skin is much happier for it.
