pros/cons to living in NC?

there is a chance h and I might be on the verge of reconciling, and if that happens, there is a teeny tiny chance that a job offer might take us to NC. I know nothing about the state, other than it is a lot further south than we are now (MA) and that I'm guessing the summers are brutal.

any pros/cons to living there?

North Carolina is actually fairly large, and the pros/cons vary greatly depending on what part of the state you live in. For instance, I used to live in Charlotte and my list would be entirely different from Asheville, where I live now. Can you be more specific on what part of the state you are looking into moving?

I live in Wilmington on the coast. I love love love it here! Summers are hot, but that is what AC is for!!!!

I grew up in Raleigh/Cary and the only thing I miss about living inland is that it would snow at least one time each year (most years).

NC is awesome!! We lived an hour east of Raleigh and there was so much to do. You had the beach a couple hours one way and the mountains a few hours the other way. There are big cities and small towns depending on where you live.

We currently live in Florida, and enjoy 99% of it, but are trying to move back to NC. I used to live in the Charlotte area and I'm ready to go back. What part of NC are you thinking of moving too? It's a BEAUTIFUL state, and much less "country" than non-southerners think. It's got some GREAT metropolitan areas like Charlotte, with loads of stuff to do, but still has that southern charm. I like that the summers and winters are each mild. No crazy blizzards unless you're in the moutains, and no CRAZY heat in the summer. Usually mid 80's to mid 90's. There's also the beach a couple hours in one direction or the mountains a couple hours in the other direction (depending on where yu are of course).

I have lived in the mountains, as well as the Piedmont area which includes, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raliegh. If you have any specific questions, I'd be glad to help!! It's a pretty big state so where you're going would help.

What part of NC are you thinking about? We live in Asheville and I like it alot. Now I would move somewhere else in a heartbeat but DH cannot do it with the job he has now. He makes really good money and thats what is keeping us here.

I just want to be able to experience something else in life but sure we would end up back here sometime.
But we are now building our house so I know for sure that we will be here for another 2 - 3 years at least.

Charlotte is WONDERFUL. That's where we're trying to move back too. There are museums, restaurants, great shopping, Awesome theatre with all the major broadway shows coming through. There's a Whitewater park that just opened not that long ago. There's Carowinds Amusement and water park which is pretty fun. There's Bobcat Basketball, and Panther's Football. I don't know if you have kids, but there are some really great schools in the area. There are also I believe 4 or 5 colleges in the area, so there's a good music scene, clubs, etc.

As with any city there are some areas you want to stay away from but it's pretty easy to do. They also just opened the light rail which has been very very successful. So much so that they are now looking to expand it all over the city.

Sadly, we haven't had snow in Raleigh in 3 or 4 years. In fact I would list that as my only con.

My DH and I are from MA. We now live in S. Florida. My brother went to school in NC for a year and then SC for the rest.

DH and I both think that NC or even SC would be our happy medium. S. Florida is tooo hot for me in the summer and I don't like that we don't have any change of season. It's very hard for me to remember what month it is because every day seems the same, only for 6 months out of the year it's MUCH hotter. DH loves golf and can play every day here if he wants.

We think that NC would be our happy medium. The weather would suit both of us. I would get a little bit more of my seasons and DH would still be able to golf the majority of the year. We would have the option of the beach or the mountains. S. Florida doesn't have trees, real trees, we would have trees. The cost of living is much easier to swallow than S. Florida or Eastern MA. You still have some of the laid back feel of the south and slower pace of life compared to outside Boston. S. Florida is pretty laid back and slow.

I would do it in a heartbeat.

Biggest pro of all-The Tarheels . But seriously I'm a native and have lived in the High Point/Greensboro area, Jacksonville area and for the past 10 years the Charlotte area. Also have a place on the coast so if you have questions I can try to help there too. We have great BBQ and Cheerwine. Beautiful mountains and the beach is the best. If I didn't love TN, I'd probably want to live in NC next. It is where "my people" are from and I think it is a beautiful state. I happen to think the mountains of Western NC are the most beautiful of all! I absolutely love NC beaches.

The Piedmont does not encompass Charlotte or Raleigh. The "Piedmont Triad" is Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point. The piedmont (foot of the mountain) region extends from Statesville in the west to Greensboro in the east.

HOwever, both Raliegh and Charlotte are great areas. LOTS of us transplanted northerners (I'm from NY). I'm about an hour north of Charlotte and 20 minutes west of Winston-Salem.

I absolutely loved my time in NC. For several years I lived in Greensboro and traveled all over the state to explore. You can, on a whim, decide that you want to visit the ocean and dip your toes in the Atlantic. I enjoyed Carolina beach alot! On the flip side, we decided one weekend that we wanted to drive to the Blue Ridge Mountains. We were only a few hours from both. How much better does that get? The climate is wonderful (mild winters and non brutal summers). Everything is green, the food is good (I say this because I'm spoiled by Chicago food), and they have SONIC Everything is very laid back in NC compaired to the hustle and bustle of up North. That is very refreshing. You will truly enjoy this state no matter where you wind up (Charlotte, Piedmont Triad or Raleigh). Good luck to you! I'm jealous

We live 20 minutes north of Charlotte and love it!! We moved here from New England 2 years ago and wouldn't dream of moving back! I love that we have all the seasons, but NO SNOW!!! It does get hot, but we have AC and a pool, so no one in the family really notices much.

As someone mentioned, we do have Cheerwine, but no one in my family likes it. We are convinced that you had to be brought up on it to like it! LOL It tastes, to me, like cough syrup!!

If you look at the map on Realtor dot com, they have Charlotte listed int he Piedmont area, I went to Piedmont High School as well. The Piedmont encompasses different areas depending on whom you are talking to, or what you are trying to do. Apparently if you're buying a house and looking on that realtor site, or reading my High school History books.......they consider it the Piedmont. I was raised to know the Piedmont, and the Piedmont-Triad as two completely different things. The Piedmont is the middle of the state. The Piedmont Triad is Greensboro, Raliegh, Durham. Two different things.

You may be correct about Charlotte being piedmont territory. I respectfully disagree that Raleigh and Durham are part of the Piedmont Triad. They are part of the TRIANGLE area. The Piedmont Triad is Winston-Salem, High Point and Greensboro.
