Pro's and Cons of Renting Points vs Buying Resale

We've had a little bit of experience with renting points (once from a Disboards member and once from David's). Both experiences were very positive and much cheaper than booking rooms through Disney.

I wondered what leads someone to buy vs just renting points?

What are the pro's and con's?

A few things I would mention as main pros of owning vs renting is that it's cheaper in the long term (approx half of renting), more control, being able to get some of the reservations that are hard to get with renting, and greater flexibility for such things as changing and cancelling reservations.

Cons would be the upfront cost and being tied to DVC in general (other than selling your contract).

MouseSavers has a good analysis of buying DVC vs. renting. That article pretty much says that if you stay at a moderate with codes and discounts, buying DVC at today’s prices will not save you money. The analysis shows it takes about 42 years to break even vs renting points.
