Proposal idea(s)

Hi,

I'm a complete newbie to here so if Ive put this thread in the wrong place then Im really sorry.

Im travelling to Disney World from the UK at the beginning of December and am planning on proposing to my girlfriend while there. Ive been considering a few ideas of the best way to 'pop the question' including a boat trip during Wishes and at the Cinderella restaurant.

However, one idea has been suggested to me and I wanted peoples feedback who had seen the show if possible. The idea is to propose during Mickeys very merry christmas party during the part when it snows. Ive never been to the Christmas show before so I was wondering if people who have would consider this a good idea, and if its plausible at all (it would be great to get a Disney photographer there for it as well etc)

Or if there are any other ideas that people can think of I'd be extremely grateful for them, as well as any feedback on the other two possibilities or jusy anything at all - im getting nervy!!!

I will say that you can contact Guest Services and they can give you some great ideas of things to do. A great idea would be to call DFTW (Disney Fairy Tale weddings - just google it!), and ask if they can get you to someone that can help give you ideas. I saw somewhere that they actually have people that can help you plan something/give you ideas. There are many events and things that go on during the month of December, so you could go to the main disney site and see what they have listed for events on the disney calendar. During a parade might be a bit noisy (but, could also be exciting in that way).

Does she like anything in particular about Disney or WDW? If you are from the UK, you can even do it in England at Epcot if you like. If you want Christmas theme, Magic Kingdom sounds like it may be the best option for xmas decor/theming. There is also the Spectacle of Lights I think it is called in Disney's Studios that is a huge hit. Looking around on the Disney website might help get you thinking of things that may fit your personalities as a couple. I always think that you have to do what you two would enjoy. For example, if she likes pirates - do it on/in the pirates attraction. What hotel are you staying in? Have you been to WDW before? What are your favorite movies? Do you want the engagement to involve a xmas theme?

There is a "glass slipper" you can have brought to your dinner table if you have dinner in the castle, they can put your ring in it! There are SOOO many different things you can do...if you give more details of things you are thinking I'm sure all of us DIS Brides can help you get your wheels turning!

OP: I love your idea to propose when the snow starts to fall on Main Street!! Another really great option would be to do it at DHS during the Osbourne Family Lights. The lights are just magnificent and they also have snow that falls! I think the Osbourne Family Lights is incredibly romantic

Yes, the Osbourne family lights show is also what I was thinking - that's a wonderful festive idea!!! You can't get that anywhere else!! It's the biggest christmas light show on earth

My girlfriend loves the castle and especially Wishes which is why I thought of the boat trip originally. Having done it a few yrs back I knew how good it was but the fact that we had already done this for my mums birthday I thought may take some of the shine and uniqueness off the event.

Glad you like the idea of the snow at the castle, im just a bit worried about the logistics of it though, getting the space to do it. Theres a package on the disney florists website that has a bed white flowers and a glass slipper to hold the ring in, and Im a bit wary of getting that to the area where I would propose without her seeing it? It would also be good to get a photographer for it.

I like the idea of the Osborne lights but knowing how much she likes Magic Kingdom and the castle in particular I think she'd prefer that to be a part of it.

You can have them bring out the slipper with the ring in it if you have dinner in the castle - this is something that they do - I have seen a few YouTube videos of people that did this. But, if you are looking for something outdoors, usually Main Street is pretty crowded for the Wishes show. But, the boat idea you are talking about sounds like you really want to do that! . Doing something you have done before may help in you understanding how in your head you would like things to go for the proposal!

The Disney Florist can definitely help you set something up if you give them a call for ideas. (which it sounds like you have looked into!)

How about going to the Rose Garden at the side of the castle in MK where the Photopass photographer is, just act like you are getting your photo taken and then get down on one knee. You'll get great photos with the castle in the background.

That's a great idea! Definitely take advantage of the Photopass during the proposal!

My fiance told my parents to take a picture of us in front of the castle and then he proposed - so that is definitely a great trick and was so cute because it was such a surprise (even though I was thinking he would ask me on the trip, I didn't expect it there in front of the castle !) This left us with great pictures of the moment!!

Unfortunately, this is not the case. They have a lot of great ideas listed under engagements on the DFTW web site, but there is very little info there about how to accomplish them and they never actually tell you to contact DFTW about them—because there is no one at DFTW whose job it is to do engagements. In fact, another recent poster said he called and asked they could do nothing to help him.

However, it seems like the OP is getting lots of fabulous ideas right here!

My dh of almost 10 years gave me my engagement ring at WDW.

He had no plan before we arrived but did an OUTSTANDING job.

We ended up at Cinderella's Wishing Well where he asked me if I wanted to make a wish. While I was putting my coin in the well (and complaining about the lack of water in it) he got down on one knee and when I turned around he asked me, "Is this what you wished for?"

It was a perfect for me since I didn't want to be the center of attention (ie in the Rose Garden, at CRT, or in front of the castle during Wishes). We did celebrate at CRT later on for dinner but I wouldn't trade our moment at the Wishing Well for anything!

Oh.. and 10yrs later we've made 5 trips with the kids (just 9yo and 4.5yo) and every trip we take a family picture in front of the well!

Aww, that's so cool that will be your wedding day as well!! We wanted a winter wedding, so we are going with a different date. We were engaged on 5/23, so just a few days after you!! He proposed shortly after midnight, after the park closed, on the castle right in front of the tunnel to Fantasyland No Photopass people (or anyone!) in sight, but I'm quite sure I will never forget it!

You would think they would want people to have the most magical experience for a proposal so the couple would consider a DFTW in future!

Well, it's even mentioned on DFTW's own web site—there's a whole section devoted to engagements that makes it appear as though they offer the same kind of services for engagements that they do for weddings. But really, it's just a list of DIY ideas. I s'pose it's better than nothing...

Oh, I'm sure they do! They just don't have anyone on staff whose job it is to do engagements—probably because there's not a way to monetize them as effectively as weddings. Even if they charged for engagement packages, the amount they could ask would be nowhere near what they make on weddings.

That's sweet of you!! Here's what my DH did:

We had bought my engagement ring in October 2008 while i was visiting him in Georgia(I lived in NJ) but I didn't tell my parents because he firmly believed the right thing to do was to ask for my Parents permission first.

He really wanted to ask them in person, but since we weren't sure when that would happen, he called to wish them a Merry Christmas on Christmas Day 2008,..and asked if he could propose. He then asked me over the phone if i would marry him. Then i put my ring on.

We went to WDW in April 2009, and one night we were in the MK and i noticed a Photopass Photographer taking pictures of guests near the castle as it was all lit up. I told him we should get ours taken. I turned and put my tote bag on the ground, and when I turned back to my DH, he was down on one knee. He caught the photographer off guard, but she made him do it again..and he did! So the whole thing was in pictures!

Ive been in touch with Cinderellas Royal Court and they sent me details of the 'Magical Proposal Package' which looks very nice, a bit expensive but perhaps worth it.

My only concerns from an entirely personal point of view are a) that perhaps it wouldnt be spontaneous enough, I think I like the idea of shocking and surprising her! and b) I did kind of want to work a fireworks show in there, just knowing how romantic she finds them, although I am starting to think that may not be the most practical thing to do.

The lady from Cinderellas Royal Court also gave me a link to the engagments section of the Disney Wedding site but as lurkyloo said, its just a list of a couple of DIY ideas (like asking the singers at jellyrolls etc).

My DH could definitely have taken some tips from you guys. I got proposed to on the sagging couch of my little apartment. Not very romantic. On the other hand, I love him, so I guess it was romantic enough!

If you have your heart set on fireworks, why not consider Illuminations instead of Wishes? There are also other restaurants that have a great view of the fireworks shows where you can pop the question with the assistance of waiters, and you could still hire Disney photographers to wait in the wings. I'm not sure which restaurants are the best, since DH and I are not big on fireworks, but I remember when we got married that there were several suggestions on where to dine to see the show over dinner.

If you go to Cinderella's Table, you might still be able to see the fireworks from a window seat. Just time it right.

DH also suggested that if you get a room in a deluxe resort that faces the park, you can see the show from there. If you're low enough, you could get Disney photographers to take pictures from below as you pop the question on the balcony. They work in teams, so you could get someone else to pop into the room quietly and capture the moment from there. This does run the risk of not working as well as you want (mis-timed, the room may not start off as ideal, she may be sleepy...), but it's a nice alternative if she's the shy type. You could even get room service to deliver champagne and a glass slipper with the ring.

Holy smokes have you been talking to my husband?? This is exactly how/where he proposed to me last Christmas!!!!!!!!!

He had a Photopass photographer in on it and when the snow started to fall and I was ooohhhinh and aaaaaahhhing, he had me turn around to look at the castle, got down on one knee, pulled a ring out of his pocket and asked me if I'd be his princess in marriage. I just about fainted and said YES!!!!!! It was a really really romantic and sweet way to propose and I hope you do it that way too!!

(we're going back this Christmas to celebrate our engagement!)


Oh I just wanted to add that we didn't have our wedding at WDW, just the proposal.

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that you can get the engraved glass slipper seperately (ie - without doing the cinderella's royal court or the florists package) but I cant find out where.

I have looked extensively, and was wondering if anybody had any info on it???

I'm pretty sure they are available at Arribas brother's crystal store. They have locations on Main Street in MK and at DTD...maybe others too?
