Proof of AP for room discount?

Now that I realized I won't be renewing our annual passes, but rather purchasing new AP's when we travel again, I'm left with a question...
To qualify for an AP room discount, when do I have to prove I hold an AP? At reservation or time of check in?
My current AP expires in Sept. We travel again in January and will purchase new AP's at that time. I am hoping to take advantage of AP room discounts to extend our January DVC vacation 2 nights, but I won't actually be an AP holder until we arrive, because that's when I would buy or "activate" my tickets. Right?:duck:
 
In my experience you don't have to prove it when you make the reservation, but you have to have your AP pass when you check in. I had to pick up my pass at DTD before going to the hotel last year because I was told I must have it in my possession and show the CM when I check in.

If you are letting your AP expire, then buying a new one, I think you can purchase it ahead of time, then it doesn't "start" until the first day you use it.

If you pre-purchase the AP (just activate it once you get there), you will get an AP voucher in the mail. This can be used at check in for the room.
 
not sure about the voucher, that sounds plausible, but when we went last it was in our reservation and we just had to make sure to show it to the people at the front desk when she got it... not positive, if need be i can email her
 

I've been allowed to check in with just the voucher, twice being asked to stop back and show the activated AP later in the week (WL, Pop), once being told the voucher was sufficient and there was no need to show the activated AP (Pop).

Twice I've been asked to show my AP and already had a valid activated AP at the time, so no problem (POR, Pop).

Twice I've not been asked to show it at all (AKL, AKL).
 
when I made a ressie for an ap rate on a room, she made me have an ap to do it. since I didn't have one yet, I had to purchase it right then, and she sent me the voucher. just the voucher was enough to check in at the yc (and they did ask for it).
 
we just got back yesterday from CBR, ( i posted on another thread.) We had the confirmation number from our AP purchase, the CM made us come back with the activated AP.

I mentioned this had never happened before, she said that it is new and they are protecting the AP holders. I thanked the girl VERY much for doing this.

If you do not show up within 24 hours of checkin, the CM stated you WILL be charged rack rate.

We activated our passes on weds 2-28 and showed up went back to the custom house on Thursday. Once she saw our AP's, she notated the reservation.
