Pronunciation Guide

Grammar is being discussed in a separate thread, but I was thinking that other newbies like might be appreciate a little guidance in some of the odd pronunciations of things we'll encounter on DCL. For instance, until I began researching our trip, I didn't know the following:

Cay=KEY
Charlotte Amalie=Charlotte a-MALL-ya
Palo=PAUL-OH
Norwalk=NOR-WALK (ok, that wasn't very funny)

Anyone else care to contribute?

And we love the meat in fritters, salad, "cracked" (breaded), stewed, steamed, fried, dried, in soup, with grits ... you name it.

Nothing says "foreigner" more clearly than if you call it a "con-chuh".

They're "KONK"s in KEY West, too [partly because many earlier inhabitants were "Conchy Joes" - i.e. white folks, from the Abaco KEYS].

And you sometimes can spot a KONK while snorkelling at Castaway KEY, the real name of which is Gorda KEY, one of the Abaco KEYS.

Hello...coming from an italian speaking family... it is pronounced
pah-lo with the emphasis on the first syllable...ciao!

I have heard several times that the correct pronounciation of Palo - is Pahhh-lo.... Not Pal-o or Paul-o. But on this one, it seems that anything goes!!!

On surial... I have heard that it is not sur-real, but more like sur-i-yel???

It is always interesting to travel somewhere and see how words really and truly sound in their native culture!!!

PS: Don't know if anyone would ever begin to settle the Nu-cu-ler instead of nu-cle-ar, But for me, the spelling alone tells me that the President has it wrong!!!!

When referring to the Magic or Wonder:

Boat is pronounced (and spelled) SHIP

Also Surial pronounciation is likely open to interpretation given the British influence of the spa staff.

Definitely "PAH-lo". Just had a marvellous dinner on the Palo-Magic about two hours ago.

Here's why it's PAH-lo:

The word is Italian for "stick". The restaurant is named after the "palo" that an Italian gondolier uses in Venice to move his gondola through the canals.

End of discussion? I doubt it.

We've been to Chankanaab a couple of times - one time for over 10 hours (we were staying on the island at a hotel). We must have been told how to pronounce it originally, because when I think of that area I always say "CHONK-en-nob" to myself.

It's a beautiful place, by the way - and there's a lot to do on the land part of the park, too, as I recall!

LOL! Thank you, thank you, thank you. It drives me nuts when people refer to the Magic (or any large sea based vessel) as a boat. A boat is a little thing with two oars. Or as one defintion calls it: A relatively small, usually open craft of a size that might be carried aboard a ship

I'll also throw my hat in the ring for Pah-lo. In Italian, the a is a short a.
