Proms

Junior year, I went to prom with a friend who was too shy/insecure to go by herself after her long-time boyfriend broke up with her right when prom ticket sales started. My then-boyfriend rolled with the change of plans beautifully, taking us both out for dinner and getting us both corsages and then catching up with us at the after-party since he'd already graduated and couldn't attend without being someone's date, and we all had a great time.

Senior year, I went with my boyfriend at the time and didn't have nearly as much fun. He was kind of a party-pooper, the kind of guy who doesn't dance and then gets mad when you dance with someone else (even if that someone is a female friend), and prom was the first big event we attended together so it was the first time I saw that side of him. We dated a few months longer but broke up not long after I started college.

My daughter went to two proms. She and her date went to different schools and met a a marching band event. She insisted on wearing two different gowns. Who in the world was going to notice that she wore the same dress twice besides her date. I'm sure he didn't care.

When I raised the subject both DD and DW rolled their eyes, looked at me like I had two heads, and said that I "just don't understand." I guess not.
Around here if a girl is going to two proms (or a junior formal and a senior prom) she usually buys a dress for hers and borrows a dress for the other. Our high school only has a prom for seniors (and a formal for juniors), and there are a few all boys prep schools that boys from our town attend.

They're usually held in the springtime, but are separate from graduation-related activities.
Around here, the prom is actually held the night before graduation. (Graduation ceremony is the following evening.) My school district and others in the area have done this in recent years to discourage underage drinking.

Back in my time, it was usually 2-3 weeks before graduation, in early June. Prom was on a Friday night, followed by a full weekend of traditional post-prom activities. Graduation here is at the end of June.

My daughter is going to two proms this year. One already happened (mid-March), the other is next weekend. Graduation is late May.

She’s wearing the same dress (and has the same date) to both. She said she likes her dress so she might as well wear it twice.

I went to both my junior and senior proms with my high school boyfriend. I was in high school and he was already in college. Both proms were held at different country clubs in the area. I still see the guy, like everyday. In fact, he's sitting a few feet away right now. Married almost 34 years!
