Hi all! :D We are back from our Carnival cruise, and I had promised to relate some of our findings, for those that are interested in a perspective that can compare very recent DCL & CCL experiences (they were about 8 months apart). I feel that is important, as cruise lines (particularly Carnival perhaps) can & do change over the years. Please keep in mind these are only OUR experiences and OUR opinions, many others will feel differently and may have firmly-held beliefs which I am in no way attempting to change or alter.

In short, we had a fabulous time on Carnival. Having read such negative posts here about CCL (although there were a few "defenders") we had pretty low expectations for our trip but we firmly decided to go in with a positive attitude. CCL completely exceded all our hopes and we had a delightful experience. There are certainly differences between the 2 lines, and I'm happy to answer any questions that I can. I hope that this can be a constructive thread and not be seen as a thread "bashing" any line in particular.

Just to hit a few highlights of our trip: our kids loved the kids programming---we have 3 and they were each in different age-groups some of the time. They thought that overall the kids clubs were better on CCL than DCL (again, not seeking flames here, just relaying OUR experiences) Our oldest is 13 and even was allowed to join the age group just below hers when she liked what they were doing better. She has special needs and sometimes didn't enjoy what the older teen set was doing. This allowed for more personalization in our experience--she moved from 1 group to the other as she chose but made sure to let us know where she was all the time. My 2 oldest were allowed to sign in/out of the clubs on their own, so we had our "rules" that they had to follow, which they did well with. We did get a beeper for our youngest child, which made us happy. We were onboard one of CCL's oldest and smallest ships, so we were not surprised that the physical layout of the specified kids clubs was small---every one of their newer ships have significantly improved in this area. But the kids did such a huge amount of activities in different areas of the ship, this wasn't a problem.

The dining on board was good in the buffet (where we went for lunches & breakfasts and really enjoyed the made-to-order omelets) and was wonderful and completely delicious in the dining room!! We had such a great experience each & every night in the dining room with the most attentive wait staff you could imagine. On DCL we had pretty mediocre servers, especially now that we compare them to our recent experience. The exception to this was the servers in Palo. Our carnival ship did not have alternative dining venues, so we ate in our assigned dining room every single night.

The staterooms were just as large and almost as nice as on DCL (although you could tell by the tile in the bathroom that the CCL ship was older). We missed not having a small couch in our room as we had on DCL, but instead there was a chair. They have singular, not split, bathrooms but since we book 2 rooms for our family of 5, we still had 2 bathrooms, so no problems there. Some of the older ships (like ours) don't have connecting rooms, so we tried 2 rooms side by side and had absolutely no problems this way. Kids enjoyed the 1st run movies on the TV in our room---of which 1 channel of the 3 was always just kids movies.

ALL of the staff on board our ship were consistently & incredibly friendly, wishing you a good day, or whatever, just in passing them while going down a hall!! A couple kids counselors even joined our family for ice cream 1 evening and chatted about their life experience on board a cruise ship--so in other words lots of fun, personal attention. We had a great time with all the activities on board, finding plenty of family-friendly things to do.

And here was our biggest worry: We did not EVER encounter obnoxious or drunk people, and I cannot recall seeing any inapproriate activities during the times we were out and about on the ship. I do know that the late night entertainment is not kid-suitable, but we were all in bed or close to it by midnight most nights anyway! :p So, just wanted to relay that we had great experiences with both our cruises, we DO NOT feel like we received a "walmart" quality product on CCL, and that we enjoyed a great product at a price that was a lot friendlier on the pocketbook. (On a cost per day/ per person basis we spent less than 1/2 of what we did on DCL). Happy cruising to all!!

Wow, great report. I am glad that you gave it to us. Many people ask about cruise lines, and CCL seems to always get a negative report. I am glad that you had a great experience, and that CCL is another choice to cruise with. Thanks again

Thanks for sharing your experience! Though we have only cruised DCL (and will be again one week from today!), I am not opposed to cruising on another line in the future. There are places I would like to go to other than the caribbean, and right now that's not an option with DCL. Glad you had such a nice trip!

Thanks for taking the time to write your report, I enjoyed reading it. DH and I took a 4-night Carnival Fantasy cruise (just before our second Disney Magic cruise) and for the money we spent we were very pleased and had a very nice cruise. Wouldn't hesitate to sail Carnival again.

Penny, Thank you so much for the great trip report. It's sounds like you all had a marvelous time. I believe the statement you made...

"We firmly decided to go with a positive attitude"

made all the difference in the world. You can not compare apples with oranges. Sure they are both cruise lines but both have different venues to the mix. Sure everyone (or almost everyone) on these boards are Disney lovers or possibly Disney Freaks (I am guilty) we all know there are other vacation options out there and it was so kind for you to share your great experiences on CCL with all of us.

There really isn't room on these boards for "bashing". You had a great cruise and you shared your experience, and we thank you sincerely!!!

Sounds like a great trip!

Which Carnival ship were you on? What ports did you go to?

Glad you had such a great time!

flame, flame, flame - bash, bash, bash
There, that's out of the way and we can get on with things. :teeth:

Glad to hear your family had a good time Penny. Thanks for the review.

Penny ~

Thank you for enlightening us with your great trip report. So glad your family had a positive experience! We are cruising with Carnival our first time and are looking forward to a wonderful time. We believe 'variety is the spice of life' and it's all what you make it!

Thanks Penny! We plan to cruise Carnival next spring for our anniversary, with our then 3-year-old. Sounds like he'll have plenty to do, and we won't have to sweat having him potty trained by then, since as you pointed out on another thread, they do diapers!

I am interested in hearing which boat you were on and where you went....

Wow! Sounds like you had a nice trip. We are thinking that in the near future we are going to have to start vacationing in the summer (around the school schedule) instead of gonig in September (which is value season on DCL). I looked at the DCL prices for July and well, it won't be happening for us.

Maybe trying another cruise line would work for us (if they are 1/2 the price)!

Thanks for the great report.

DJ

thanks for the nice, positive responses! Glad this thread is of interest to some. To answer the questions:

We were on the Celebration and I think it started cruising in 1987? (so maybe 10 years or so before the Magic?) And it is quite a bit smaller, at 47,262 gross tonnage and guest capacity of 1486 persons double occupancy. It was just refurbished within the past 6 or so months and was in tip-top shape. The brash neon that I had heard precruise was common to Carnival ships was toned down---the public areas were really beautiful! We went on the 5 day Western Caribbean out of Galveston (since a port we can drive to is a real benefit for us) during our spring break from school. Because it was a 5-dayer, when I did our pricing comparison I did take into account the difference in cruise lengths and did a cost per day analysis. Our ports were Cozumel and Calica/Playa del Carmen, where we went to Chankanaab and the Mayan ruins at Tuluum on our own, thanks to great info I got from the boards I visit.

I thought of a couple other things I didn't mention earlier. One is that DCL does make debarkation easier; we had to wait for our luggage tag color to be called before going to immigration and debarking the ship. This wasn't really any problem for us, but it did mean that we didn't get to just walk off the ship entirely whenever we wanted. Embarkation was similar on both ships. Also, Carnival puts your gratuities automatically on your sign and sail card (same as KTTW card) about the 1st day of the cruise and you are free to adjust them as you choose during the cruise. We left them as they were and gave both of our servers plus our room steward additional cash tips in person.

We are planning DCL, but next year, many of us are going and it looks like the prices would be too high on DCL (much as I would like to stay with DCL). Carnival always has pretty competitive rates but I have always assumed they might not be a good choice. This makes it seem like that would be a good alternative, rather than not going at all. Thanks!!!:bounce:

Thanks for the info- this is so exciting because we have Carnival sailing out of Baltimore and we could do a trip pretty cheaply. No airfare plus lower cruise costs will make a big difference. We wanted to plan a family reunion cruise on DCL but I am afraid the cost may be prohibitive for some. Carnival might be a good alternative.

Thanks for a great report.

I think the key is what I quoted above. You didn't go into it expecting too much and you went in with a positive attitude. Both of those are key to having a great time on vacation no matter if it is CCL, DCL or WDW.

Too often people go into something expecting too much and are left disappointed, or go in looking for something wrong and therefore find it.

Glad to hear you and your family had a great time.

Penny--It is SO great to hear that you had a good experience on Carnival. It's funny the stuff you mentioned is all stuff that we tried to "compare" with DCL as well. Our kids *like yours* preferred the Carnival Kids Club to DCL and spent much more time in Carnival's than Disney's. We also must have had the same wait staff on DCL that you did as they did nothing to entertain our kids, didn't remember anything that we liked, never remembered that our kids ate the same thing at every meal. When we've gone CCL they usually had a Diet Coke waiting for me or Chocolate milk for my ds. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! I agree that they have toned down their glitzy neon feel and that the amount of "drunks" on board is down as well. We haven't ever encountered those types but then maybe it's because we acted like we were one of them.:teeth:

Glad you had a good time!
Heidi

Thanks for the post!
In regards to the kids clubs, what ages are your children and do they charge for the clubs after a certain hour of the day?

Thanks again - we've been considering Carnival for a shorter cruise so this was some great info.

I was also wondering about this.

continued thanks for all the pleasant responses and questions!

hydster~~ I think I read your positive responses about CCL in the past and had asked you questions, too. Wonder about our servers ;) do you suppose they were the same?! LOL "Leroy" from Jamaica was one of those that told us repeatedly to mark "excellent" on our card for him, too bad he never delivered on that level of service. On CCL, our family was LOL and all smiles every single night.

Now for the questions: We loved our DCL cruise, it is where we discovered our love for cruising and we're now OATC Club Members (officially addicted to cruising) :p We would cruise with the mouse again, but the higher costs will likely have us sailing on other lines (especially now that we've had a positive experience elsewhere). I work for the public schools, so my vacations are tied to school holidays, and we would not take our kids out of school for vacation, although I know this works very well for others. So, we have to cruise during the most expensive times, and I'd rather go on 2 cruises a year than just 1 for comparable costs. (unless I get a huge windfall some day! LOL) Forgot to mention this also in my review...we got lucky and booked when Carnival was running a special promotion. Because of this, we got upgraded 2 "levels" just for booking when we did.

Our kids ages are DD6, DS10, and DD13, so we had kids in 3 different Camp Carnival groups. (except as I mentioned when my DD13 joined the group below hers, where she had made a couple of friends) Camp Carnival hours ran until 10PM but they offered "after hours" care for a fee if you wanted to keep your kids in Camp longer, up to 3AM each night. These were $6/hour 1st child, $4/hour each sibling (we did not use this). They also had an "official" slumber party 1 night for the 9-11 year olds from 10PM to 3AM with many activities planned, for $26 1st child, $14 each additional sibling (we also did not do this). The last day of the cruise our kids all got a free Carnival tee shirt from the staff and our DD6 got a Carnival travel bag also. And they also had a talent show that any interested kids got to perform in on the last day of the cruise (2 of ours did do this).

HTH as I love answering any and all questions. I love to read & "chat" about all cruising, so I hope to remain welcome here on the disboards, even with countdown clocks like I now have going! :teeth: Keep the questions coming, if you have them!

PLease stay here! Disney has also been priced out of my price range with other cruises being half the cost. I myself have been looking at other cruiselines and the more information the better. Carnival also departs right out of where I live which is nice versus driving two hours.
