As a junior, I decided to go to prom this year. I figured it this way:
You only have high school to go to prom, but you have the chance to go to, say Miami (as you suggest), before, during and yes, after high school. Essentially you only have very few opportunities to experience prom.
The history of prom goes far back and was originally named as "promenade" which was a celebration of becoming "mature" and "independent."
With that said, I would ask, why is prom so important? Keeping in mind those things and more, prom ultimately is the chance to take on independence and maturity as you are given the moments to make special and memorable. Prom is a major part of high school and not attending may supply regret later in life.
For most, it is the first occassion that asks its attendees to pay attention to financial matters, time management and social interaction. Taking part in this experience not only helps build upon those skills but also provides an entertaining atmosphere. Becoming invloved in prom is almost as important as being involved with your class reunion or graduation. It may sound silly, but with great research (far beyond the financial aspect) prom means more than the obvious and it takes a deeper look inside to see what it is really about.
It just so happens I did an in-depth story on prom at our school and with surveys, I have discovered that prom is NOT as expensive as some make it to be. Remember, you are not forced to spend a penny. Everything is optional and YOU control how much you spend.
These are my estimated "bills" (everything is measured in maximum amounts:
Dress: $300
Shoes: $50
Hair and personal grooming: $25
Tickets: $50 (exact amount)
$425 seems extremely reasonable for prom finances and for a lifetime memory, far underpriced. Now, I don't have a date for prom nor do I expect to get one before this dance, but I am going for the reasons I have stated above and to have a blast with my friends. I can take that trip to "Miami" sometime later, but prom is now, and now only. I don't know about any of you, but I like to seize the day...
