Has anyone had success ordering prom dresses online? DD has prom in May and we are having a hard time finding a dress in our local stores and major dept. stores. Looking for suggestions for online retailers. Thanks!

We ordered my dd's dress from Macy's last year. They had a much larger selection than our local Macys and a good return policy. I have also ordered formal wear from Nordstroms in the past.

I'm not sure how common this is anymore, with the way prom has gotten bigger since I was in HS -- but when I was in HS, almost all of our "prom" dresses were really marketed as bridesmaids gowns and sold at bridal stores.

When I got married, we ordered the bridesmaids gowns online through PearlsPlace.com -- they had a great price! If your DD finds a BM gown online she likes, she might be able to contact Pearls Place for an online price.

I'll also ditto Nordstroms online, I've ordered formal dresses from them before for other events. And BananaRepublic online as well.

We didn't get my dd's from here, but I really loved some on the Sears website. All kinds from long and formal to short and perky. Great prices though.

Does your school do a Prom Dress Swap? Our high school had one last weekend that my dd figured we should check out. Well to my SHOCK and delight, she got a gorgeous gown for $15!!!! Fits her perfectly! We just need to get a necklace and bracelet to go with it.

They had a ton in all different sizes and colors and lengths. You paid $5 to get in...parents free and then another $10 if you found a dress.

I am still amazed she found one since I was expecting to fork over a bunch of money for one. Definitely worth checking if there are any in your area.

I haven't actually ordered from them, but jjshouse has nice ones to look at, and you can order to your measurements. But I have no idea on the quality or service. DD12 and I were also looking at promgirl.com and they have neat dresses (she just loves fancy dresses- she's not going to prom!). Also have not bought from there. We just like to window shop.

Amazingly, after she picked out her favorite style, we were at a thrift store and found a very similar one from Deb that fit her and is like new. She can wear it to concerts and church. Have you looked at any consignments or thrift stores? I know my daughters look every time we thrift shop and it's not often we find something good enough, but it does happen.

Also, I ordered DD15's homecoming dress from China on eBay. It was $18 shipped. I figured we could take the chance on fit because the back was smocked and stretchy, and the straps adjustable. The quality was fine and the fit was great- came up a little higher on the chest and a little lower towards the knees, unlike most in the stores here. She has a long torso and can't do most short formals. I see there are lots of big poufy prom dresses from China- I suppose it is hit or miss depending on the seller.
