Projection Mapping Life Expectancy?

It appears to me that, although technologically impressive, there is life limit on using it. Maybe it will be expanded to many other buildings throughout each of the parks so it becomes more immersive as you walk around.

It is going to be around for as long as possible. Disney is fully invested in the technology.

I think it's going to be around for a while. I continue to see new ways that Disney is using it to enhance or create experiences.

Agreed. I guess what I am trying to grasp at is what is the next technology Disney might do. I was thinking that maybe quickly deployed screens (deployed at night during the projections) that expand the "images" to make it more immersive.

I think the big production 'first' that we are seeing this Christmas is the implementation of temporary LED Walls... these are the 'billboards' that have been set up on Sunset Boulevard.

Projection mapping will be a disney staple for sure... but Drones and new LED Wall technologies will be where you see the most change in the near future.

Yes! Maybe, just maybe, a drone will be armed with a projector while the other deploy the "screens". Now, we're thinking!

Is that what they are? They just looked like regular projection screens to me.

By its very nature, projection mapping actually doesn't require a screen, just an object (any kind of object will do) because the projection gets mapped to that object. Ever since I saw the show at one of the stops (Sacramento) for the "World of Color Road Show," I have been fascinated by the tech and have seen all sorts of videos on YouTube with it demonstrated, such as on the facade of a shopping mall in Saudi Arabia, the Christ The Redeemer statue in Brazil, and even a car!

Bumping an old thread here...

Don't forget that this mapping isn't just used on buildings (i.e., Cinderella's Castle, ToT) but also has been implemented as part of animatronics. The Seven Dwarfs in the SDMT ride is an obvious example as are the character's in the Frozen ride.

Side note:
I found this 'whitepaper' of sorts from Imagineering giving a bit more information on the tech that you all might enjoy reading:

Edit: user below corrected me.

We did it at our church for Christmas a few years back :)

I did a quick google search to see if I could find mention of the first time Disney used this technology. I found this 'whitepaper' of sorts from Imagineering and while not explicitly stating it, this gives the impression it was indeed Lumiere while also giving a bit more information on the tech that you all might enjoy reading:
Projection technology was used by Disney before Lumiere. It's used in several places in the HM at DL and WDW.

In what manner? I'm talking more in relation to the animatronics as opposed to the glorified wallpaper we call "projection mapping". I'm genuinely curious to know what other animatronics use this tech.

Not glorified wallpaper, Madame Leota, the 5 singing busts and the Grim Grinning Ghosts. I would also include the the ballroom scene, but in a different format. It's also used on at least one of the characters in POTC.

Wow. Total brainfart on my part. ;)

How long have those been using PM? I've been going to Disney regularly (2+ times/year) since about 2005 but have a horrible memory so I only 'caught' the PM after I realized Lumiere was using it. I'm sure I noticed it but guess I never really gave it much thought until that point.
