I am 12 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child and had an appt with my OB today where we discussed me taking weekly progesterone shots starting at 14 weeks. I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and how it was. My 2nd child was born at 36 weeks and while he was healthy and fine, we'd like to avoid another preterm birth, particularly earlier than 36 weeks. The OB said that progesterone shots have been shown to help prevent preterm labor in a woman who has already had a preterm delivery. Obviously I will do what I have to do, but I do know that progesterone is suspected as a big source of morning sickness and I already have that bad and know I will for another 6 weeks or so. If the shots are going to make that worse, and make it last the whole pregnancy (or until I stop the shots anyway), I'd like to know that in advance. Or any other side effects I should know about?

I have had two friends who've had the progest. shots. Both of them had previous deliveries prior to 34 weeks. It helped them both make it to 37-38 weeks. So it sounds like it works.

Good Luck. I have never heard of them to extend pregnancy but I frequent a Trying to concieve. I take suppositories right now but hopefully will stop around 12-14 weeks.

I didn't take shots, but I did take pills for 12 weeks. I hate to tell you this, but it was awful!! I was nauseus and exhausted all the time. I told my dr that is was like someone made me take a sleeping pill and then carry-on with my day. I could sleep 15 hrs a day on those things. About 48 hrs after I stopped taking them, I was a new person!

Good luck!!!

Ugh, Beca, not what I wanted to hear! That is my fear, exactly what you said. And having 2 other kids I cannot imagine being like that the whole pregnancy.

Good to know it did help your friends, though, zachandsamsmommy. That's all I want, to be able to make it to 37 weeks. Even 36 weeks like my son I would be okay with, but I'm concerned that if this one comes sooner there could be problems.

Even though my son wasn't that early, my daughter was born at 37 weeks, my son 10 days sooner, so the concern is that the trend might continue with this one coming at 34 or 35 weeks.

LOL! I am so sorry to be the bearer of bad news!! I certainly would do it again to keep my pregnancy/baby safe....but, as much as I would love to tell you otherwise....I definitely did not enjoy it!!

Here's hoping your experience is MUCH better than mine!!!
