Welcome to the DIS board, JMH!! You will find an answer to every question about the Swan on this board. There are people who have stayed there numerous times. Ask any specific question, and someone will have the answer. I have stayed at the Swan once and the Dolphin once.
Here are the best things about the Swan:
1. The location: The Swan and its sister hotel, the Dolphin, are located in the Epcot area, between the Yacht Club/Beach Club and the Boardwalk Inn. You can walk to either place. Just on the other side of the Boardwalk is Epcot and it is a nice 10 minute walk. You can also take a boat. You can walk to MGM in about 15 minutes, but the boat goes directly there from the Swan.
2. It's a deluxe resort, but because it is a Westin hotel it offers different discounts than Disney. We stayed there for $149/night this summer. They have WONDERFUL heavenly beds, as do all Westins. The rooms also are up-dated. The service is excellent. Because everything is so close, we didn't have to rent a car. You also get into the parks an hour early like you do when you stay in the Disney Resorts.
3. The Swan is smaller and more intimate than the Dolphin, and it's easier to get around. They are the first pick up on the bus route to MK, AK water parks and Downtown Disney. The Swan has its own quiet pool and shares the larger grotto pool with the Dolphin. The Dolphin also has a 24 hour food court, Tubbi's. It was a very quick walk from our room at the Swan. Much closer than it would be to the food court from some of the rooms at Disney resorts.
I don't know what other personal information you would like, but feel free to ask. We stayed there with our sons, ages 2 and 4, and found it great to be able to go back to the room for an afternoon nap and swim. One day we went to Epcot twice and MGM once from the Swan.
The only negative I can say about the Swan is that the discounts out for 2005 are not as good as they have been in the past. Hopefully they will offer some better prices as time goes by. Right now they have a $99 allearsnet.com special for Dec. 8-15, 2004.
