Problem with 2010 & 2011 Points allocation?

Although we are glad that the re-allocations have made things more even, we got hit hard, as we come for approx. 2 weeks each July. Between the last 2 allocations, we have taken a hit of 40-45 points (can't remember exactly).

When we made our first purchase, we understood from our guide and from the documentation that the points within a year could be reallocated. We padded accordingly with points and realized that we may have to adjust days of stay or season to stay within our points. Moot decision, as addonitis took control!

Maybe you could buy Aulani and pay the 10% fee for a fixed week!!!

I just added up the points needed to stay in each size villa in each time peiod for a week at OKW and found that yes they had changed - they are lower - wonder where the extra points went?

Haven't looked at the other resorts but may do it later just for fun. I think the biggest reaction as others have said is the change in WE and weekday allocations as that impacted the most people. For those staying 7nights, at least at OKW you could come out ahead.

As noted, you have to compare to a base year not just any year. Plus the points for the lockoff components don't fall under the limits of the POS protections.

Debbie it's possible I read the "apology" part somewhere else and I am not even sure it's fact-I was just trying to understand why it was being viewed by some as a negative thing.

So in the end the new points allocation was simply to put back in balance something that had gone askew? I guess the question I am trying to ask is why was lower point requirements during a Sun-Thurs a bad thing? Or was the difference (between a Fri/Sat as compared to Sun-Thurs)just so drastic that they needed to address it?

What were they trying to accomplish with this?

The members had gotten so good at using/abusing the S-F option that it had skewed the usasge so much that something really needed to be done. My info suggested that a reallocation was needed around 2000-2001 but those in control at that time were reluctant to proceed given all the complaints from the previous reallocation. Those currently in control are more willing to proceed where appropriate in spite of member complaints and were really forced to do so given the imbalance.

Disappointed, yes, since we also liked to go during the weekdays, but we also ended up doing several long weekends so we benefited by the change on some trips. Someone mentioned that the reallocations resulted in their using 4 or 5 times as many points. Not sure if I under stand that unless they were in the habit of going for multiple weekday trips. all in alll we're pretty satisfied with what we have and feel that our investment is serving us well so far.

That would be us. We purchased back in 2004, so point re-allocations weren't even mentioned.

We come for 2 weeks, so between those 2 weeks, we are at approx. 30-40 points more than we were for the exact same vacations. The 4 or 5 times as many points referenced my response that our guide said we would be ok with a small cushion of between 5-10 points; hence the 4 or 5 times that amount of the cushion. It's not a cushion when it's like 30+points more over a 2 week span that is needed for the exact same vacation. It then becomes an add-on...

How I understood the allocation was like this: For any given resort there were a certain number of points that added up to the total point value to stay at that resort. Totally grabbing a number out of the air lets say it was 1000 (again-completely made up number). So that 1000 points is split up throughout the year, by season, by day of the week, by length of stay, by holidays, by size of unit, etc. Different point values are assigned to different units during different periods. Now those point values could change-but in the end it would never be more then the original 1000 points. Any time they raised something they had to lower something else. But the beauty of DVC was that if I buy now I am protected from inflation that will ultimately happen. I would always be paying the same rate that I bought in for. Perhaps I misunderstood what she was saying, but that was my understanding of the whole thing.

Now based on that I could see that your points values would fluctuate, but not by much. The guide sold us on how many points we would hypothetically need based on how long and when we usually come. Giving us the impression that if we came during Value season for 1 week and wanted to stay in say a 1 bdrm-we would need X amount of points and we would be all set. It's a little annoying to find out this is not the case. Doable-but annoying.

But this is why I read these boards-the more I can educate myself, the better I will feel about my purchase and the better I will be able to purchase what will work for our family and our vacation habits.
