DWs camera has developed a problem where there is a purple line that run across the picture. It is most noticeable in low light/flash pictures. I am assuming that this is a problem of some sort with the sensor. The camera is a Sony W330 p&s. Are there any fixes for this other than sending the camera for repair?
What replacement would be recommended. She is just looking for something small to carry around to take quick pictures.

It does sound like a sensor problem. They can get lines like that when they start to fail. And it's probably going to be cheaper, and easier, to replace the camera rather than repair it.

As far as which one.. make a list of features you want and look at the cameras in your price range that have those features. Then go to the store and play. There's so many point and shoots out there right now it's hard to say "go get this one", know what I mean? I tend to look at Canon, Fuji and Panasonic. For the really small ones the Canon Elph cameras are great, IMO.
