Probably a dumb AP ?

We're going to WDW in Dec and staying at POR with points. We are planning another trip for next October for our first trip "home" at SSR therefore we want to go ahead and use our DVC discount and purchase APs. My question is can I go ahead and purchase now or in a month or two or do I need to wait until closer to our Dec. trip? We also want to purchase the DDE and I've read that it takes 2-3 weeks to process so should we purchase that with our APs fairly soon as well?

Thanks for the help on this...I'm sorry it's probably a dumb, common question but I've looked through the posts and can't find exactly the answer I'm looking for.

You can call Member Services and get an AP voucher now, if you wish. The voucher must be traded in for the actual pass at Guests Services outside one of the parks or at Downtown Disney. The AP use year starts when the voucher is redeemed, not when it is purchased. You can also purche it while at WDW at a Guest Services location.

The DDE must be purchased over the phone with either a voucher or actual AP code number. Yo can call and order your DDE a few days before your trip (the office is only open on weekdays, normal business hours) and arrange to pick up a temporary card at EPCOT.

When you purchase an AP (when you're not on-site) you get an AP voucher. From what I understand, the voucher is good for years, up until the time you activate it. We bought our AP vouchers last December, since we figured there was going to be a cost increase at the beginning of the year. Our original intent was to activate them in May, but we ended up doing a quick weekend trip for the Expedition Everest Sneak Peak in January.

You don't need to wait until just before your trip to purchase an AP voucher. What's nice is you can use the voucher to get into the passholder area of Disneyworld's website to see what discounts, etc. are available.

Once you activiate the voucher the clock starts ticking, but not before.
