Has anyone ever hired a private investigator?

How much do they charge? Anything I need to know when looking for one or before/after hiring them?

My parents have hired a couple in the past 10 years. The first one they hired was a friend of my dad's from the Air Force Reserve. He charged my parents about $25 per hour of services. He usually charged $40 per hour but he decreased the price for my parents. My parents paid him $250 when he first started doing work for them. Eventually they paid him another $100 dollars to cover to pay gas and lodging. This was back in 1999 when the price of gas was very cheap. My friend's dad died in 2001. The last time my parents hired a PI was in 2007. The guy they hired worked with them charged them $400 up front to do various database checks and 2 days of following work. I think some PI's tend to hour to hour charging while others ask for a set payment up front. Another tip when looking for a PI is ask about their backgrounds and previous careers. The best PI's tend to be former law enforcement officers and former military servicemen. Just ask around and I look up info on the ones in your area online.

My parents hired a PI a few years ago to run a bunch of checks on a guy I started dating (we met online, and they were super uncomfortable with that). I actually wouldn't date a guy from online anymore just knowing that it probably wouldn't work out AND my folks would feel like they had to check him out. Oh well . . .

Edit: Oops, forgot to say it was around $400
