I took this picture last week while on holiday.

Please could you advise me as to what size i could get this picture printed without loosing too much detail?

I quite like the picture and would like to make a poster from it.

I took the picture with a nikon d40 6.1 mega pixel.

Thanks for any advice.

Also has anyone used an online printing service?

There is a chart out there somewhere that breaks it down, but I have printed plenty of 8x10 from my 6 megapixel camera. Might be able to go a little bigger than that, but probably not much. 8x10 will be fine, though.

I have a 24x36 inch print of the castle in my office taken with a D70 which was a 6.1 mp camera. The camera was set on raw.The detail is very good. My son has a 24x36 of horses from Hawaii that is amazing. It was also taken with a D70 set on raw.

I really like your picture as well. Do you use photoshop or other editing software? my only suggestion if you want to print it is see if you can reduce some of the blowout of spaceship earth. I am sure it came from the time of the exposure to get the detail of the boats etc. I think if you get it made into a larger print the first thing your eye will be drawn to is spaceship earth.

Did you shoot in raw. If so it should be easy to adjust.

Once again great shot!

I agree with YesDear... try to reduce the blow out on spaceship earth along with the blow out of the pole on the left side of the picture. Otherwise you got beautiful detailing in the gondolas and the water/sky combo is striking.

Mpix.com is a great lab. It's the consumer side of Miller's (which is a pro lab, and one of the best out there) and they do an outstanding job with color management. You may have to pay a little more, but if you are blowing up to a large size, extra money for extra quality should be a consideration. If this was taken with the largest JPEG setting, you should be ok, depending on how big the poster you select.

It depends on viewing distance and how good the original is but 6 MP should be ok at 20" x 30" or even larger. I have had prints that large made from 6 MP (and even 3 MP) and they look good.

Do whatever editing you want, then set the resolution to x" by x" by 300 pixels per inch. Do the final sharpening after all other steps are done, then set the final compression ( I use maximum quality jpg) and send it off to Mpix.
Their metallic paper might look really good for this image.

It is a really nice photo! :)
