I need a new printer to replace my Epson. I'm looking for one that prints well (not photo printer) but the ink cartridges are not mega expensive. That is the problem with the Epson - I just bought refills in May ($90) and they are dried up. I'm not a heavy printer so I may go a few weeks without printing anything. Thanks!

You want a laser printer if you're not printing photos. Laser "cartridges" are called toner and don't dry out like inkjet cartridges do. You can go for months without printing anything and it will still work.

I have the Brother 2280 model (bought a refurb one at Staples a couple of years ago for about $80) and it's awesome! I'm still on the toner it came with. I opted for the black & white printer because I just print documents and coupons. They make color laser printers as well. Look around for the 2280 model...you can regularly find it for about $100. Slickdeals posts sales on them a lot. It does duplex printing, copy, scan, etc. It can be hooked up wirelessly to print from your iPad or whatever also. It's been a huge moneysaver for us! I was sick of buying inkjet ink and having it dry out after only one or two uses.

If you don't need (and I mean really need), a color printer, you can pick up a monochrome (B/W) laser printer fairly cheaply.

Most people really DON'T need a color printer. On the rare occassion I do, I either take it to the local print shop or beg a friend.

We replaced a "problem child" color printer back in March with a new HP laser printer (P1606dn) NEW IN BOX from Staples for just over $100.

I love it. We use it a few times a week and am still on the "starter" ink that was included in the box.

The best part is that my sister-in-law, who used to send us (seriously) a couple dozen <or more> pictures of her cats/grandchildren/daughters each month and ask that we print them out and take them over to her parents, no longer asks us to do that.:cool1:

Instead she has to make the prints and mail them via USPS -- and seriously the old folks enjoy that so much more -- they are from the era where they look forward to getting mail in their actual mailbox. Of course, she only sends the rare photo or two now that she has pay the costs....
