Just wondered how everyone feels about getting their photo's printed? I would love to have a simple photo ONLY printer at home that does NOT hook up to my computer, but I am not sure if they do a good job?

Usually I just have my photo's printed at places like Wal-Mart.

Can you give me any suggestions on printers vs. store prints?

Thanks so much

P.S. thanks for sharing all you great pics on this board, they truly are beautiful.

I print normally at home on an Epson Photo Stylus 1400. I can print up to 13x19, although, I rarely print over 8.5x11. For me, I obtain a huge amount of control over my printing and can print from RAW files, which is the highest quality, if I take the prints to a store, I would have to normally export them in JPEG and then I would loose quality.

Okay, that being said, things to be aware of:

- Store Kiosks often alter your photo, not that this is bad, but sometimes, the computer will modify your prints.
- I am not aware of too many stores which allow you to see images on a color corrected monitor. Then again, most users don't have a color corrected monitor at home either.
- Store Personel can ruin prints - last time I printed a 16x20 at Wal-Mart, the store employee picked up the print and put two creases in it - and didn't wear white gloves. Why? The person was not trained and supervisors don't care either. They printed 6 16x20 prints for me that day, NONE of them turned out our were creased by the employee handling them wrong.

All that is pretty anal I agree. But here it is, it's often cheaper to print at the store than in your own home. Especially if you can do prints in large quantity. And the ability to upload images from home and pick up in the store, is a great advantage.

Then again, I have a canon CP780, which is a battery powered, 4x6 printer. I print from it in the field, mostly for when I do classes. It's a great little printer and works nicely, if you get something that you print directly from the camera to printer, or memory card to printer, you might want to see about getting a printer with an LCD screen.

PictBridge - one last thing, PictBridge is a protocal most cameras have, it allows you to connect your camera to a printer and print from the camera to the printer - this is a huge advantage if the printer doesn't have a LCD screen. You'll need to make sure your printer and camera are PictBridge capable.

If I'm making some enlargements or printing just a few photos I'll use my Epson R1800 at home. If I'm doing something for someone else or making a large amount of prints I'll send them out to a quality lab.

IMO most of the home photo lab printers put out better quality prints (when properly setup) than you'll get at Walmart.

I print all my stuff at MPix. I love their metallic paper! Try it it out on some prints and you'll be amazed at the colors!

Similar to others, I print at home on my HP Photosmart occasionally and for light-duty casual use, but when needing very nice prints for sale, gifting, display, etc I'll get them done through a good lab usually online (though I have occasionally used my local Costco after giving them a few test shots and finding they do a half-decent job). Still nothing better than the good online labs that can print based on instructions for not correcting or correcting, and using high-grade paper options and custom sizes.

We print all of our prints at home. We have a few printers but the one we use to make quick 4x6 prints is the little portable printer that just does 4x6 prints. I think it is the picturmate. We even took it on our Disney cruise and the Wife printed pics out and worked on her scrapbook. The daughter loved putting pics of the days happenings on our door with the magnetic tape we took.

I just ordered some prints from Mpix for the first time. They are gorgeous. The quality is outstanding and I am just amazed. For large size prints they are cheaper than all your "cheapie" print places like Shutterfly ($2 for an 8x10 vs. $4!!!).

I have a photo printer at home. The colors and quality are okay, but they eat ink like crazy. I use them when I need to print something to drop in the mail (a single picture for my mom) or when I need to print something to finish up a scrapbook page.

Otherwise, I get everything printed online. Now that we are the parents of the "grandkid" I even have shutterfly automatically mail my prints to my family.

If you are looking for just a 4x6 stand alone the picturemate is excellent. I use that at my workplace and it fantastic.

For cost & price, you probably can't beat ordering online at snapfish or the like, but for a great quality print I have to agree with pp.... mpix is amazing.

Any opinion on Kodak printers esp the 9250.

Understand they are very economical on ink plus long lasting prints.

I prefer ordering online. This way I dO not have to worry about ink and paper.
