My 5 year old son wants to dress up like his cousin (female) is for our lunch at cindy's table. I thought I would find him a prince charming costume this time of year for sure. I can not find one in any of our local stores, and the only ones I find on line are well over $50, some $80!!! Has any one come across one in your journey, be it in stores or on line?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I have just finished "creating" my own. We are doing lunch at CRT with my DS2, DD2 and DD7. I figured he needed to coordinate with his sisters.

Anyway, I bought him a pair of red pants at JCPenney's for about $5 (off one of those Okie Dokie tables). They are kind of a windsuit-type material with a basketball short lining. I also have a plain white oxford shirt. I bought a skein of yellow yarn and 3 pieces of felt ourt of the craft section at WalMart (for about $4 total). I made two lengths of yellow yarn (by sitting on the floor, stretchingmy feet about 2 1/2 feet apart and looping yarn around them) about 30 strands thick and about 2 1/2 feet long (measure your son's pants and add 8 inches, you can always trim the excess). I tied off the "top" end and cut the "bottom" end so there was no "loop". Then seperated each 30 strand length into thirds and braided it and tied off the bottom. I basted these braids onto the outside side seam of the pants. I made 3 lengths of yarn about 20 strands and about 2 feet long, separated those into thirds and braided them for the shoulder braid, chest braid, and belt. I made a "pattern" for the epaulettes (ornamental shoulder piece) about 4 inches wide and 6 inches long with one end rounded. I traced this pattern (twice) onto a piece of felt and made two epaulettes. I made two lengths of yarn about 6 inches long (around a child's hardback book) and 30-40 strands wide, clipped both ends, then spread each one out and machine-stitched it to the felt epaulette. I then basted the epaulettes to the shoulder of the white shirt. Under the epaulette of the right shoulder I stitched on the shoulder braid and one side of the chest braid. I stitched the other side of the chest braid under the left shoulder epaulette. Then tie the belt around the waist.

I know these directions are a bit wordy, but I tried to explain them asbest as possible. I am not a particularly crafty person, but this was really easy and I think it is just pretty cute.:thumbsup2

We leave for Disney tomorrow (Oct. 18):woohoo: and will be gone for a week:cool1:  , but I'll check back this evening if you post any questions.

Good luck!
