How does it work? Is it a bidding site? When I looked at hotels in Buffalo it just gave prices so I'm a bit confused.

choose the 'bid now' option

put in the check in and check out date
click bid now
next screen:
choose buffalo amherst
choose 3 1/2 star hotel
enter what you wish to pay in the 'name your price' field and it will accept or deny

You are going to get the best price a week or two before your trip. I had a back up hotel booked that I could cancel without a pentalty 'just in case'.

There are a couple of sites that you can visit to see what hotels are offered where you are looking. Make sure that you can live with any in that area as these hotels are non-refundable. I am not sure that I can post the sites, but I will try. Betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com. They can be quite helpful. We have mostly gotten good results.

+1 This is good! I copied the 8 zones that will be your options for the Buffalo area. The added bonus is that since the Buffalo Marriott Niagara is the only 3.5* hotel in all 8 geographic zones for Buffalo you could start bidding at $50 and then add another zone and bid again if unsuccessful. You could bid up to 8 times within a 24hr period. You can usually get it for $60 + taxes so around $70 if you are bidding a few days before your actual stay. If you check betterbidding you will see recent winning bids.
