I was pricing the same cruise on the official site for both Aug 7 and Aug 21. It is the Eastern 7 day. I wonder if I am doing it incorrectly as there is a big difference in the 2 weeks price. I know some schools go back before labor day and that may be my answer to the 21 being so much less. Just for example on the 7th a cat 4 is $8235.60 and the 21st it is only $6975.60. Cat 11 on the 7th is $5275.60 and on the 21st it is $3795.60. All of these are for 2adults and 2 children. I wonder what day my kids will go back? I sure like the lower prices!:teeth:

I think you are correct about schools going back. Here in New England it's around Labor Day, but I know in the South they go back around mid-August.

We are on the Aug. 21 cruise. We are using DVC points. The 8/21 cruise is a different season. That is why it is so much less.

Yes, the price difference is because of it being later in Aug.

Last year we went on DCL July 26 through beginning of Aug. Looked at the same cruise 2 weeks later (eastern cruise) and it was significantly less money. Most people are winding down the summer and even if they aren't quite back to school yet, they're getting ready for it and are not as likely to be taking that summer vacation at that point. Again this year we're taking a cruise on Aug. 1. If we'd wait 2 weeks later we'd save some nice $$, but since I am a therapist with our local public school system, I have to be back 3rd week in August.

The August 21, 2004 cruise is during Value Season, where the August 7, 2004 cruise is during Regular Season according to my DVC Vacation Planner book. That's why we chose the 8-21-04 over the 8-7-04 sailing.

Schools in Pinellas County Florida start Aug 3, 2004. I think most of Florida starts around that time. Maybe that's why the value season begins the 2nd half of August.

Thank-you so much for the quick replies. I don't think we will start school before labor day so the 21st might be a great last summer fling! With what we save we could spend a few days at the parks before the cruise.:teeth:

Should you decide to do the 8-21-04 cruise, check this Cruise List out. And check out this 8-21-04 Cruise Thread

Many schools start back now prior to Labor day. Here in Texas, most schools start up in the 2nd or 3rd week of August. In addition, the last week of August is also about 1 week prior to the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season -- so there is an increased chance of rough seas, poor weather, and changed iteneraries. As such, I would imagine that there is lower demand for this time period.

Here's a link to the historical hurricane seasonal activity:

You'll find that many places in warm weather including the Southeast (FL, HH, etc), Caribbean, HI and MX are all cheaper or easier during the second two weeks of August. This works for timeshare exchanges, hotels, condo rentals, packages even air fare in many cases. Same can be said for the first week or two of June but to a lessor degree.

To DisneyCrazyMom...
Did you try calling your school district office to find out the start date of school? Our school district office already has the 2004-2005 school calendar on the district website.

My kids are at a small Catholic school that will be under construction this summer (we are going to get a hot lunch program!!!!) anyway the principle is tring to decide how far back to push our start date. I was just in her office Friday voting for after the 28th! I think we will have some idea in the next few weeks though.:teeth:

If for any reason August 28th doesn't work out for you and you end up on the August 7th cruise, we have a lively bunch talking about the cruise on the August 7th Cruise List

We live here in Florida and our kids go back in early August. It is amazing how a few weeks can make such a big deal, but for those that can wait, its a big deal or big blessing in the money they save. I was checking the September rates and they go down even much more.

Here in Cobb County, Georgia, the 8/7 cruise would be the last week before school starts. The 8/21 cruise will be during the second week of school.

But as has been mentioned earlier, you also have a greater chance of having your itinerary altered by tropical weather. Although the Hurricane Season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, the peak of activity seems to be between mid-August and mid-October.

Hey Lori, do you by chance know the last day of school for the 2004-2005 school year??? I live in Pinellas County too, and cant seem to find it. We have our cruise set for 5/15/05. I'm wondering if we'll be ok or will end up missing the last few days of school??? Thanks for your help!!

To make this post on topic;) I had the same thing happen to me when I was making my first cruise for 2004 (we had to switch until 2005). Up until about May 16, the price was lower, but the next sailing was quite a bit more! It was the change of the season.

I'm not Lori, but that question could be answered with an easy Internet search. The last day of school is May 17, so yes, you'd miss the last three days of school.
