Hello everyone! This may seem like a strange question but here's the back story: About 2 weeks ago, my BF came down with a head cold....it started off as a sore throat and then got progressively worse and lasted about a week. This morning, I woke up with a sore throat and we are leaving for WDW this Sunday! I can't be sick for my vacation! Does anyone have any ideas on how to prevent this from turning into a full on cold? I've been drinking OJ like crazy but any mom's out there have advice for me? I'm desperate!!!

I was gonna say OJ (which you already are drinking) & rest, rest, & rest some more. Which is almost impossible to do when you are leaving for vacation in like 3 days and you are trying to get packed and organized and on and on and on. The more rested your body is though, the better it can fight off whatever you have. Can you just call your Dr.'s office and see what they say? Hope you start feeling better very quickly. Maybe this will help! pixiedust:

My sister got some of that Zicam (I think that is what it is called) when she was getting a cold, and she was completely better within 2 days.

Try Airborne. I've used it a few times when I've felt the start of something and it worked every time. Take the maximum daily allowance and also make sure to drink lots of fluids.

Cold-Eze seems to help me. Also, Vitamin A is supposed to fight infection, so eat carrots! Also I've found that if I'm fighting something off and I eat anything sweet, I'm SURE to get sicker. Whereas if I concentrate on fruits and vegetables, I more than likely get better.

Yes, I agree...go and buy Airborne! Take the maximum dosage and it should work. It worked for me last Oct and I was in the same situation.

i would buy the kids version too, and give it to all of your kids who are age appropriate. It might save you a few trips to the walk-in clinic.

good luck and have fun! :woohoo:

I agree--buy the Airborne.

Also, wash your hands frequently. If you are already fighting off this cold, then your immune system might be down. If you wash your hands a lot, it'll minimize the chances of picking up something else.

Get plenty of sleep. I know that's not easy to do before your trip because you're probably too excited to sleep. But, try to sleep if you can. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies.

I hope you are all better for your trip.

Gotta put in my vote for AIRBORNE. We,ve tried Zicam, Coldeze and neither worked and Zicam actually made me feel really strange. My husband was so skeptical when I tried to get him to try Airborne after the other two but now he takes it on a regular basis and never gets sick. I will probably start taking it again after I have my baby in July as well.

WOW I wish I came upon this post last week. I just got back from Diseny yesterday and on saturday night coming back from dtd my throat was killing me. I continue with the plan schedule cause I im on vacation and by the afternoon the next day I thought I was going to die. came home from the water park and stay in bed the rest of the day did not go to the park the next day I kept taking mortin, dayqual and nightqual. and by tuesday my throat was feeling better but now I had this really bad cold, and by wednesday night and thursday I almost lost my voice due to coughing. I stil have the cold now and my ear is still blocked from the plane.

My advice toyou is go to the doctors now get whatever you can cause being sick in disney sucks. when you are there drink alot of water so your throat does not get dried out.

If you have the cold virus there's really nothing you can do to prevent it from taking its natural progress, usually 5-10 days in most people. Over-the-counter stuff can soften the symptoms, but there's no reliable way to prevent a cold.

On the other hand, maybe you could be "lucky" and have strep. In that case, your doc could clear it up with an antibiotic and everything would be hunky-dorey.

Zicam has worked for us.

Airborne, not so much.

Stay hydrated, wear socks to stay warm, and keep your fingers crossed.

I have to disagree! True, antibiotics only work on bacterial infections but your own immune system can fight off viruses. In fact, your immune system fights off viruses that you don't even know are in your system. By boosting your immune system you can shorten the duration and reduce the severity of a cold. Having 6 people in our family we are sort of a tiny experimental group....LOL Here is an example. Just about 2 weeks ago DS#3 starts off with a sore throat and body aches. The next day DD starts with the same symptoms. I give them herbal/vitamin remedies and they end up having a mild illness that lasted 2-3 days. So mild, I had difficulty getting them to rest! I started to feel a slight sore throat while they were sick so I started popping my herbs/vits RIGHT AWAY! I took those for three days bc. the mild sore throat returned every night but I never did get fully sick. In the mean time, DS's #1 and #2 get the same thing. One takes the herbs/vits faithfully and has the mild, short form. One is hit-or-miss taking the pills and he is sicker for longer than his brother. Lastly, DH gets the same thing. He takes no herbs/vits and has the most severe and longest lasting illness of all of us. Lesson learned: The length and duration of this same viral illness was indirectly proportional to the amount and frequency of the herbs/vits taken-- ie: the more herbs/vits taken the shorter and milder the illness. I know this was the same virus bc. it shot throught the household like wildfire within a week's time.

So what do we take? Ester C w/ bioflavonoids (2X500mg), Echinacea with Goldenseal (2X450mg each) and Olive leaf extract (1X500mg) Three times/day with meals. It's important to start as soon as you feel ill and be consistant! There are many other herbals, vitamins and minerals that also boost your immune system, but this is the combo that works for us.
Myself and the kids who take this stuff have not had an illness get to a severe form in the last 3 winters!

Edited to say that the dosages given are ADULT doses!
For the younger children I have children's extracts. You put a few drops in water.

This sound like the trip we had Nov. with our 5yr twins. Their colds got much worse (coughing all night) and only regular doses of pain meds and colds meds kept them going. One ended up in the hospital a day after our return due to asthma problems. Even if the Dr had not given med. before our trip I could have called for an RX when things got worse.
So now I need to plan another trip so they can really enjoy disney

I just loaded up on Airborne (both adult and child formula) AND Zicam for our upcoming trip. When should we start taking the Airborne? The day before our flight? The day of? How LONG should we take it during our trip? Every day? Every other day?

The whole family came back with strep from our trip last June...trying everything NOT to repeat that! :sad2:

Determination works for me. I simply refuse to get sick. Everyone in my office was sick a few months ago, they just passed it around. I was the only one who didn't catch it (or miss work because of it). I simply refused to get sick.

My DD has been sick off and on all winter long and I never got sick. Again becaue I refuse. :)
