Any tips for helping my preteen DD fall asleep? She's a night owl and can easily stayup past midnight if I let her. Of course then she's in bed until noon or later the next morning.
My DS almost 13 (On MOnday) is doing the same thing. He is on the 11 to 11 schedule. He gets it honestly, I've always been a nightowl myself. He is ging to be in shock when middle school begins. Bus comes at 7 am.
I am a nightowl and it kills me when I have to wake up at 8 to go to work for 8 hours.
Like 2 weeks before school starts, have them go to bed an hour earlier every few days and waking up an hour earlier every few days..then by the 1st day of school they'll be back to their original school sleeping schedule.
When I was at school getting my teaching degree, we heard all about learning styles. Well, I think if ew really care about learning styles (not just what fits parents schedule), then we should have schools that start later for teens.
I would gladly teach from 10am or later until 6:00 or so!!
My DD16 is the same way. And she does come by it naturally, but I cannot INDULGE in my preference to stay up till midnight and sleep until 10 am. I can only wish! Sometimes I force her up at 9 am and you would think I was pulling her teeth or something. I think it is a teen thing. Have to say though, that once shcool starts, she is up and at 'um bright and early
I've always had a similar problem with my dd. She's been a night owl as long as I can remember. I started making her get up at the same time every morning no matter what time she went to bed. It has worked like a charm. I make her get up at 9:00 am in the summers and school times dicatate what time she has to get up in the winter months.
I know I love to stay up late, especially in the summer. when I have early morning practice or when school starts, my parents start the schedule, where I go to bed about an hour earlier and wake up about an hour earlier progressively. if your dd cant fall asleep, which I have a problem with, she should try listenting to some relaxing music in her bed. I used to do that, now I listen to sports talk, that helps a lot!!
I fell into the night owl pattern when I was 10 or 11- I'd stay up until 2am reading when I had school the next day. More than 10 years later, I'm still the same, only now its 5am on the net Things that require me to be up before 9:30 or 10 are torture! I have to be up at 8 to go in to work early two days a week, and even though I've been doing that for a year, I'm still not used to it, and doubt I'll ever be!
This isn't a summer break sleep pattern and it's not something new. We fight over bed time all year long. I try sending her as early as 9:30 on school nights, but she's usually up until 10:30. I know it's summer, but I don't want her to fall in to such a deep habit of sleeping later that when school starts back up she has an even harder time to waking up. I can send her to bed at 10, but she'll lay there until midnight-1am, not able to fall asleep.
Last night she took OTC allergy med for runny nose and coughing. I thought it would make her drowsy and help her fall asleep. She woke up early this morning thinking she hadn't slept miuch. She did and she's been awake since 6:30, after finally going to bed at 11:30.
My DS (16)is up until about 1am or 2 if his cousin is here. They are still in the pool at 11:30 most nights. I have to drag them out. They act like it's the middle of the day. Of course they arn't up until about 10 or 11 in the morning. To be a teen again!
I'm such a night owl...My regular bedtime is like between 3-5...over the last few days I've gotten like 20 hours of sleep in the last 3 days it's not fun! Like I'm up b/c my friend was going to come over at 8 but since it's raining, she's not, but at least I got like 7 hours of sleep last nite!
My mom can't really say too much to us about sleeping...she works nights(she'll be home in like 10 minutes) so she never gets up until after noon anyway.
But the closer I get to band and school, the earlier I have gotta go to bed or I'm gonna be SOOOO tired! For band, I gotta leave at like 7:30 and for school I gotta leave 6:45(but only one more year of this! AHHH! )
