The vast majority of the machines take 50 cents and a penny. There are some (exit of Space Mountain comes to mind) that are pressed dime/pressed quarter machines that take more -- but for those you aren't pressing a penny you're pressing a dime or a quarter. I'm sure someone here knows the details of those machines

Each penny costs 50 cents plus the penny that you are pressing. Try to get some older pennies that are all copper (I don't know the exact date the switch was made) as they look better after pressing.

The quarter machines cost $1 (4 quarters) plus the quarter you are pressing (so 5 total). I don't know the cost of the dime machines. There are not very many of those.

When we did pressed pennies, I soaked them in a vinegar/lemon juice blend, which made them REALLY shiny! We then stored them in the plastic M&M tubes for easy access when we got to a machine. You can also search for the listing of all the designs available and where to locate those specific machines if you want ones of specific characters or attractions.

My mom keeps hers in an M&Ms container too. And she layers them: two quarters, one penny, two quarters, one penny so she always has the change she needs without digging around.

I stacked two quarters and one penny in Rx bottles, since we didn't have M&M's. I gave each child their own bottles and a snack sized zip lock bag to store the pennies. They had so much fun collecting them.

EXCEPT for the special FREE Agent P Pressed Penny that is part of "some" France Missions in Agent P's World Showcase Adventure.

The machine turns on automatically without quarters being inserted,and one of the France CMs even gives you the penny to use-it's really cool.

If you're feeling crafty, the Creative DISigns board here has many designs they'll customize free for you to make a label for your m&m container AND I learned through there that Mentos gum comes in an oval plastic bottle that is just right for fitting the elongated finished penny. Our last trip, I printed one for each of my kids/nieces on the trip so they had personalized matching quarter holder & penny holder. Kept them all handy in one place and each kids' separately stored. Super-fun activity (bought me some shopping time in Epcot shops while the kids found penny machines) + cheapest souvenir you can get! Have fun!

I do have M & M containers and thanks for the tips on cleaning the pennies.

I use pennycollector.com; however, it's not very accurate for DHS and sometimes for AK, because of the construction. Look for Lake Buena Vista. Penny Collector also recommends presscoins.com, but I haven't had as a good a luck with it. Supposedly, Guest Relations knows where they are or has a map. I haven't bothered waiting in line though.

The dime machine at Space Mountain is 85 cents (3 quarters & 1 dime). Dime machines are very rare. I believe it's the only one in WDW, and the only one that I have ever seen. I have been collecting these off and on since I was a child. As others said, penny machines are 51 cents and quarter machines are $1.25. You can also purchase a WDW pressed penny book for $8.95. It holds pennies/dimes and some quarters. They are actually pretty nice quality. Some of the gift shops have them, particularly at the resorts and at World of Disney.

EDIT: Since we (DS and I) do a lot, we don't bother trying to get the higher copper content pennies. We just collect shiny pennies all the time and put them away for trips. Sometimes, they are the older ones. You can get change sometimes from a nearby change machine or a gift shop; however, I usually stop at the bank and get 2-3 quarter rolls before our trip. TSA doesn't like the quarter rolls in your carry-on, so you might want to check them. Universal also has them but not for Harry Potter.

If you google 'locations of pressed penny machines at Disney World', the second link that comes up (I don't know if I can post it) has little maps you can print out and take with you. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but unless you're looking to collect every single penny, it's probably helpful.

This is DS's new obsession! We just bought the little book to keep them safe, and he loves the machines!

Sometimes, the shiny ones are so shiny that it's hard to see the design. However, this happens with really dark ones too. Maybe medium/used looking but not really dark and dirty. It doesn't seem to matter with quarters. I guess they get don't have as much crud on them anyway, just scuffs.
