I'm trying to plan in advance and bring the pennies with me. I Know the machine at the zoo here you have to put other change in as well to get it to operate. Will I need to have any other change?

My kids started the pressed penny collecting 2 trips ago. The total cost is 51 cents, so bring lots of quarters too!! Also, we noticed that the new bright shiney pennies turn out the best!! We pressed some old, very dirty looking dull pennies, and they just dont look nice. Be sure to buy a pressed penny holder too! We have one almost full, so we will be getting another one next month. Oh, while we we there, someone gave us this huge list of all the pressed pennies you can get and their locations! Im sure if you look around online, you can find a similar list! Have fun!

We had a ball collecting the pressed pennies. We usually didn't actively search them out, but just kept an eye open for them!

Have fun,
Michelle

My son has almost two full books. This is something he really enjoys and has been collecting around here in So Cal, as well as on trips to Alaska and the Northwest.
Shiny pennies do work best, but it would be best to have ones minted prior to 1982. They started adding zinc to the penny after that and many of our pennies have gray streaks that show through. I've sorted our pennies and will try to clean them with Tarnex prior to leaving in two days. Aren't I a good mom? (or am I just obsessed?)

Just a quick FYI, if it isn't really busy at the front desk they can pull up a list of where all the pressed penny machienes are. Friends just returned from WDW and asked at the desk since they were short by one of the seven dwarfs--The list indicated a triip to the penny machiene between the Yacht and Beach Clubs would have just what they were looking for! Happy Hunting!:p

Oh - thanks, I wonder if the WDW desk at the Dolphin will have this, if not other than the resorts can I get one at the parks. I guess I could always stop in at the BW or BC and ask nicely even though we are at the Dolphin.

My girls would love to have a list - Thanks
TJ

THere is a pressed penny locator list at www.allearsnet.com but I am not sure how up to date it is.

Regarding the pennies themselves.... I agree with the "pre-1982" info. They look much nicer when pressed. And regarding cleaning them, just soak them in a shallow pan of white vinegar for a day or two, then rinse in a sieve in the sink. I also put mine in a lingerie bag (kind for machine washing delicates) and put them on the top rack of the dishwasher, but I don't think they got any cleaner. DD scrubbed a few with a toothbrush and dish liquid. But the vinegar worked the best.

Put them either in a film cannister (stacked two quarters, one penny, two quarters, one penny, etc) or in an M&M minis tube. I got two tubes at the movie theater that were being tossed out. Washed and loaded and ready to go !!..............P

This is such a fun pre-trip activity for the kids. We went through all of our pennies today and found the ones that were older than 1982. We now have them soaking in vinegar and they are getting very clean and shiney. I am letting the kids all take a roll of quarters ($10), so each of them will need 20 pennies- for a grand total of 80! I love the idea of layering them in the M&M minis tubes. They love pressing pennies around town at the zoo, museums, etc., so I know it will be a big hit with them at WDW!
