Pressed Pennies

There are machines all over Florida where you put in your penny and it is pressed flat with an image imprinted on it. You'll see them at all the attractions. You can buy books to keep them in. My two boys collect them (and you get pressed dimes aswell) and they make a good value souvenir.
Disney and other also have 'special editions' so we have Xmas, 100 years of Disney - that kind of thing.
It is very popular and we often get to chat to other collectors while we're getting ours.

And pressed quarters. Those darn machines are everyway and my DS always makes a beeline for them.

Basically, Disney has perfected another way of separating you from your money, at very little cost to them.

This has always intrigued me.

Does your penny really get pressed or is the machine loaded with what looks like pressed coins?

Just occurs to me that if you get your own coin back pressed then there is no profit to be made by anyone (that would be a first!).

Thanks everyone I can just see my three being drawn to this one!! but I think we will try to stick to pennies!

Oh, there's profit involved alright! - you put your penny in the machine, plus 2 or 3 quarters to pay for the pressing :) Lots of fun for kids watching the gears inside the machine whirring away, though.

Yep, you get your very own penny back. That's why it's always nice to get some brand new shinny pennies.

It's a shame that you are now being charged for a pressed penny. When me and my boyfriend first went in 1995 these machines where quite hidden away in the corners of shops in just disney parks and you put your penny in and it was pressed for free! I got minnie, mickey and goofy. Other people i spoke to who went at a similar time didn't even see the machines. Then when we went back in 2001 the machines were everywhere, very visable also in sea world and gatorland, along with wallets to buy but yes, you had to put your penny plus extra to pay for the privalege. Obviously a craze took off since '95.
