My son has decided that rather than collecting pins he will collect pressed pennies. I don't really know where to start with information to help him. Has anyone done this or can anyone point me in the right direction to get the info please?

Do I need to bring heaps of pennies or .......? with me.

They have them around the entrance to the candy shop on Main Street. I haven't done that since I was a kid and we would go to Seaworld or Universal back in the day and they would have those wax mold toys, anyone remember those?

Basically I've got nothing of help to you on the pressed penny deal but others definitely will.

For each pressed penny you need two quarters and a shiny penny. They also have pressed nickels and dimes I believe. We LOVE our pressed penny collection, we have a DL book to store them in. We just started the last time we went and only have about 8 so I am by far no expert.

I did just find this link the other day though that lists all of the pressed penny machine locations in DL, DCA and the DL hotels - Pressed Penny Locations

Have fun!

DL sells books that your son can keep his pennies in

a pressed penny costs 51 cents or some stores have pressed quarters for $1.00

Main Street has a penny arcade and it has at least 5 machines with different pressed penny styles.

Hope This Helps

Oh my goodness... amazingly, I STILL have the red wax lion that my grandpa bought for me at the L.A. Zoo 30 years ago! Crazy, I know...

My sons do the pressed pennies every time they find them anywhere we go ... they definitely are a cheaper souvenir than hats or t-shirts that they'll just outgrow - 51 cents...we always pack a roll of pennies and quarters when we go. We have them from 20 different states and a myriad of venues, and of course from both DL and WDW. They love them, and are certainly a great way to sit down and talk about this trip or that trip and stir up the memories. We didn't get them all, but there certainly were a lot of really cool ones at DL during the 50th.

DD loves to press pennies and collects them from everywhere we go. You will find the presses in the strangest places. There is one for almost all of the major rides and they are in a nearby gift shop. There are presses for each land and most of the main characters. The books hold from 36- 50 pennies and 12- 15 bigger coins- nickels and quarters. 51 cents per penny, 55 for nickels and $1 for quarters

We empty the biggie banks before we leave and pick out the shiny ones and put them in ziplocs with enough quarters to press a large amount because yo may not have access to change when you find one

Great post - thanks so much!!

We leave on Saturday, and have been collecting coins in an old glass water jug for a few months now.

I had no idea about the nickels and dimes (but knew about the pennies and quarters).

My son will be thrilled when I give him another reason to dig through the "bucket" (aka: the glass jug).

He is really excited about doing the pressed coins. Plus, we heard that Universal is having penny machines too, so he is thrilled about that possibility.

Thank you!!

Another tip that we learned is to carry your quarters & pennies in M&M Minis tubes. I think you can fit a $10 roll of quarters and 20 pennies in each tube and, if you alternate them (2 quarters, 1 penny, 2 quarters, 1 penny, etc.), you'll always be ready when you find a machine.

Also, try to use pre-1983 pennies so you don't get a streak of silvery zinc. Pre-1983, pennies were mostly copper.

And I sort of recall that cityhall as a list or a map of all the press machines.

ohh... Don't forget, each machine can do 3 or 4 different pennies. Always a dilemna for us!

I had a set of wax animals from the San Diego Zoo! I loved my rhino. :)

Wow, you guys are dredging up some very deep memory from me. I do think I had something like that, from somewhere! Wow.

My 3 year old loves the pressed pennies, and just the other day brought his book (bought at the store in Adventureland, something like 6 or 7 bucks) that carries them while visiting some people, and they were an instant conversation starter. :)

At first I thought they were kind of a waste, especially when DH went off with DS and spent all "my" laundry quarters, but he likes them so much I'm OK with it now.

We totally do this on our long trips (M&M tube)! It works great. Keep in mind that some are pressed quarters, so you may want some extra quarters in your bag too. Pressed quarters are $1 + the $0.25 for the quarter. The books you can buy usually have space for some pressed quarters too.

So cool many have memorieso f the wax toys! Yes, we would get them at the LA and SD Zoos, Wild Animal Park, Universal and Seaworld! Maybe Marineland too.

My grandma would get them for me and I'll never forget being a kid and watching them be created... and that smell! I loved it and wish I had a few still! I wonder why they no longer exist, maybe kid's got burned or tried to eat it or something.

I was just telling a friend about the wax animals I got from some zoo in LA when I was a kid! She thought I was crazy telling her about that machine thingee that made the animals you picked and how they'd come out all warm (sometimes HOT!!) I got burned a little from my little wax elephant. Maybe thats why they're not around anymore!
