Pressed Pennies?

Hi everyone.

My DS11 is really looking forward to seeking out the pressed penny machines.

My question: I'm assuming we'll need American pennies & quarters, right? Could we change some USDs for coins at a Guest Services desk?

Any input from experienced penny-pressers would be appreciated! :)

We used mainly U.S coins but we did try some Canadian coins and seemed to work fine for us. My son made one for each of his grade 2 classmates as a souveneir and they loved them.

Guest services and any CM at a cash register would give you change. Because I don't like waiting in line (yet another line-up) to get the pennies, I now collect clean, shiny U.S. pennies and U.S. quarters whenever I find them in our penny/coin jars or in any change that I get back. I put them all in a ziplock bag and bring them with us on our trips to DL or WDW. (Though someone on the DIS suggested using old M&M containers -- another great idea.)

I've seen quite a few DIS's recommend pre-1982 US coins. Something about the metal used being more pure? Anyways, also read to shiny up your coins to let them soak overnight in ketchup. Salsa was mentioned but more folks seemed to like the ketchup better. Plus it's cheaper.

Does anyone out there know how much the machine charges to press coins? Or is it free.:lmao:  free at disney! Is there such a thing?

It is 50 cents (2 quarters) to press a penny. I think it's 4 quarters to press a quarter. They have slots to put all the coins in.

50 cents??? wow - to press a penny.

that's pretty expensive just to press a penny. We went to L.V. a few years ago and their press was 10 cents to press a penny. that's more like it.

I also found the tip on the disboards about using the M&M tubes and stacking 2 quarters, one penny, etc. This was two years ago and I had two tubes ready to go. The M&M tubes full of coins appeared to airport security as GUNS! Since you can't even bring more than 3 oz. of lotion or a lip gloss in your purse any more, I don't recommend this method. I will say, though, that the pennies are worth the 51 cents. My son was just looking at his collection tonight (2 years after the trip) and loving the memories. They are a cheap souvenier compared to many other items in the Disney shops!!

We also used the M&M tubes and the same thing happened to us at the airport. My mom's bag got searched but when then they saw that it was only coin we were ok. I must admit the M&M tubes are handy but you can't have the coin in the tubes when they're in the luggage/bags....best to maybe use a ziploc bag for the coin and have the tubes filled afterward.

Here's a link to a list of the pennies you can press at WDW.

You can also purchase in the gift stores a pressed penny collection book that will hold your pennies. It's a great way to save them all.

It's funny, on our first trip anytime I'd look and couldn't find my husband I knew there had to be a penny machine nearby. :goodvibes

Also my husband tried using a Canadian quarter to be pressed but it just flew out the machine half pressed. I joked with him and said "you wanted to outsmart the machine":rotfl:

Have a great time!
