I am wondering if there is any difference between Canadian pennies and American pennies. Is there a better year like they say before 1982 for american ones. I won a trip for 4 to Disney and will be taking all 5 of my kids and my husband and my step sister is coming with her 5 kids. Any other tips would be really helpful. Thanks

DW collects these and I found her a site that has tons of info as well as printable listings on where to find the presses. She uses these as check lists on each trip. There are a lot of them!! Have fun finding and collecting them.

Just to let you know you may also find some machines that are pressing quarters in WDW now, they ran $1.25 each. :goodvibes

Yes, Canadian and American pennies are different. You can really mess a machine up by putting in a coin it wasn't designed for. However, it's pretty easy to get change at WDW, which is a good thing because you could twist your spine trying to carry enough pennies and quarters to feed all of those Disney machines. :)

I always try to use pennies from before 1982. Pennies made after that have a zinc center that shows through when you press the coin - those silvery streaks will turn black with age. That said, if I don't have an older penny, I figure that a using new one is better than not getting the smashie at all.

I don't shine my pennies, but there are tips all over the web on how to do it. Some people use a pencil eraser or some metal shiner, which strikes me as a lot of work if you're talking about more than a few coins. I've seen some say that they simply leave the coins sitting in ketchup for a while, then rinse and dry them well, and that does the trick. I haven't tried it so I don't know how well it works, but it sure seems easy enough to try. :)
